Oracle Park has McCovey Cove. PNC Park has the Allegheny River and the Clemente Bridge. Petco Park turned a neighborhood of warehouses into one of the best downtowns in baseball.

I went down to Zidell Yards on the South Waterfront, where the Portland Diamond Project wants to build an MLB ballpark. It’s 33 acres on the Willamette with the skyline, the bridges and Mt. Hood in view, and Tilikum Crossing right next door, a bridge that’s never had a car on it.

A fly ball that clanked off the roof, a line drive that sailed past a glove by centimeters, and a deep drive that could’ve been gone. The Brewers played well enough to win this series, no doubt, but, man, what an insane set of heartbreaks for the Padres. Still can’t believe it.

Longtime assistant and former DePaul coach Tony Stubblefield is expected to serve as interim coach for the season.
