"In a public comment submitted to HHS in July, I urged officials to obtain the human evidence needed to justify a threshold before setting one." Sounds like a rather reasonable suggestion before criminalizing consumers of the product.

"Somewhere along the way, the pursuit of influence eclipsed the pursuit of evidence." Nailed it!

Excellent piece!
I’m in @wapo today discussing legal threats to vaccine access. Dismantling the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program would result in an avalanche of lawsuits—with patients footing the bill.

We call on France to exercise restraint when dispersing the freedom fighters on the streets of Paris. These brave warriors for justice must receive immediate humanitarian aid, and their safety must be guaranteed in accordance with international law. Failure to comply will leave us no choice but to bring a case before the ICJ, in close cooperation with that renowned champion of human rights, Afghanistan.

1/2 This is a well-deserved recognition of the years of mostly thankless but invaluable contributions from @imaracingmom. But it's also a win for @FDATobacco because she'll be providing the very perspective congress intended them to benefit from by requiring this slot on TPSAC.
A huge huge huge congratulations to the amazing and wonderful @imaracingmom on her appointment to the FDA’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee!

But most consequentially, it's a win for smokers. @imaracingmom has not only shown her willingness to speak on behalf of the forgotten smokers, but she has exhibited a powerful efficacy doing so with her unique voice.

The judge should keep this on a very short leash. 45 Days is long enough. The underlying issues affect broader policy issues and harm consumers, not just the parties who agreed to it.

A brief halt is warranted, but the public policy considerations should also play a factor.

Otherwise, it sends a message that every party who has standing should file their own case, which would paralyze the courts, given the degree of harmed by @FDATobacco's failure to comply with the tobacco control statute's clear deadlines.

So much for the “gateway effect”!
More than a million people in Great Britain who have never smoked report using an e-cigarette daily or occasionally, figures from the Office for National Statistics @ONS show bmj.com/content/395/bmj-2026…

Re-upping this post: Importantly, @FDATobacco’s leadership is now owning and promoting the fact that the agency has the responsibility and the capacity to communicate much more effectively and directly to the public about the continuum of risk and the value of switching from combustible cigarettes to the far safer products authorized by the agency. Dr. Bret Koplow just said so. (Note: They didn’t use to say that.)
“There is a gap between the science and the belief.” Very important observation — and lament — from @FDATobacco director Dr. Bret Koplow, who emphasized today in his keynote at FDLI’s annual tobacco and nicotine conference that adults who smoke can significantly benefit their health by switching to reduced-risk products like FDA-authorized vapes. But a majority of Americans, including PHYSICIANS, don’t understand this. He said that FDA will partner with academic researchers, scientific organizations, and other stakeholders in turning this around.

In a sane world, reasonable people will see that these groups are now lashing out at @FDATobacco because the groups do not care about public health, particularly the health of smokers, government data and rational policy making based on facts.
