I hope policymakers and postulators will keep in mind that cutting, capping, and limiting governments' taxing power, from the state to the local level, got more votes than ANY winning candidate on the ballot this year. #ncpol

The main motivating principle for democratic socialists seems to be envy: resentment of those who have more. Appeasing that impulse would be a big mistake. #ncpol johnlocke.org/why-the-democr…

The John Locke Foundation proposed rules-based redistricting reform in 2023. Here is a summary. Details in the link below. #ncpol
I agree about the amendment being needed, but I’m deeply skeptical of “independent” commissions. This just invites more conspiracy theories and fighting. The path forward is clear ground rules for what constitutes a district.

If Republicans campaign as the party of limited government, free markets, and affordability but govern with tariffs, industrial policy, higher spending, and economic intervention, voters may reasonably ask what they are getting from Republican governance that they could not get from Democrats. Tonight suggests that contradiction carries an electoral price. #ncpol

How close do I think the race for control of the NC House will be? So close that I changed my mind halfway through the podcast. I started saying that I thought Republicans would barely hold on, but ended up thinking it would go Democratic 61-59. #ncpol

Hear Ms. Slader talk about her latest book (and get a SIGNED COPY) at FreeCon Raleigh on Nov 18th! #ncpol Tickets are $25 (dinner included): events.humanitix.com/freecon…
1/2 The publication of @sladesr’s new book “Fusionism: Liberty, Virtue, and the Future of the American Right” has prompted a spate of reviews, articles, and assessments of her thesis that the American Right should champion both the cause of individual freedom and the tradition of moral virtue. Fusionism, she wrote, is “rooted in the idea that human beings were created by God for a purpose and that fulfilling that purpose requires cultivating good habits. Not every fusionist has the same religious views, but all share a common appreciation for the timeless wisdom of their patrimony. And unlike many on both the Left and the Right today, they know that freedom is an integral part of Judeo-Christian moral thought.” @FreeConTalk signatory @ThomasDHowes agrees. In a @LawLiberty review of what he called Slade’s “fantastic new book,” Howes endorsed her argument that “fusionism, rather than a mere coalition that only made sense in the Cold War but not afterward, is a coherent philosophy. “Not only is it a philosophy, but it is also the philosophy of the Founding Fathers. It is the philosophy of liberty and virtue, and even a claim that liberty and virtue are mutually reinforcing.” Also writing in @LawLiberty, #FreeCon signatory and Hillsdale College professor @BradleyBirzer wrote that “Fusionism is one of the most important books not only of 2026, but of the first third of the twenty-first century. It is an able retelling of the past, but also a guide to the future.” In a @CivitasOutlook forum about the book, FreeCon signatory @RichardMorrison observed that over the past decade, “right-wing political rhetoric has begun to tilt away from the traditional equilibrium of small government, economic freedom, and personal virtue — what we generally call fusionist ideas.” “For Slade and many of her fellow critics, this is a time for choosing as serious as any in modern history,” wrote Morrison, a senior fellow at @CEIdotorg, for “action must be taken to defend the governmental restraint and commitment to due process that were once the hallmarks of principled conservatism in the American political system.” And in @AmSpectator, FreeCon signatory @DonaldDevineco1 defended Slade’s book from critics on the Dissident Right. “Fusionism’s freedom synthesis is anchored not on an abstract ‘virtue,’ as many traditionalists would have it, but on a real history anchored on a time-tested tradition,” wrote Devine, a senior scholar at @TFASorg. “Reagan indeed followed that tradition, and it is still conservatism’s best bet for a moral and free future.” Freedom Conservatives and all others interested in the future of the American Right should read the book. Slade will also be the keynote speaker at one of Freedom Conservatism’s three post-election regional summits: #FreeCon Raleigh on November 18. Find out more below.

"Most voters" in NC also often elect Republicans to statewide office Often recoil at woke politics & collectivist policies endorsed by the Left/Cooper Often support policies those have fought tooth and nail, (tax caps, voter id) It's the dissonance that can be a headscratcher.
Roy Cooper is about to win a historic, crushing victory on Tuesday, chalking up his seventh statewide victory. Most North Carolinians just like him a lot. If you don't, and it completely mystifies you how this is all possible, you really need to reevaluate how in touch you are with most of the voters in our state.

It always strikes me how the postliberal players present their domineering path as the strong, tough, manly path, when it's arguably the weakest, low-T path of beta capitulation there is available to anyone professing a love of liberty.
Globalism has failed. Markets don’t magically transform people into Americans. The Vice President of the United States speaking openly about restoring American nationalism is another sign that we are entering a Golden Age. Candidates on the Right will need to share that vision if they plan to remain viable in the years ahead.

"If a tax cut that benefits everyone means a few rich people will benefit, then *nobody* should get a tax cut" is a weird argument. But it does reveal someone more motivated by envy of the rich than compassion for the poor. #ncpol

Since 2020, NC has banned Zuck Bucks, updated the absentee ballot deadline, & tackled collusive election lawsuits. But we still need to improve list maintenance, start routine audits, & allow election observers for nonpartisan candidates. @andyinrok johnlocke.org/changes-in-nor…

The kids today will also struggle with the idea that local governments are creatures of the state under Article VII of the NC Constitution—not independent sovereigns. Conservatives have long favored limiting the growth of taxation at every level, because the people who pay the taxes (not just the officials who spend them) deserve guardrails. A statewide constitutional amendment decided by NC voters, requiring the General Assembly to enact levy limits (with exceptions allowed), is not a “takeover.” It’s the sovereign people of the state exercising their authority over their political subdivisions. Local control is a means, not an end. When local officials face weak constraints on property-tax levy growth, the result is higher burdens on homeowners and less accountability. That hasn’t changed. #ncpol
The kids today will never believe it, but there was a time when "conservatives" opposed top-down state government takeovers of local control, because they claimed that questions of taxation were best decided by the people directly taxed. The conservative movement is just... different now.

This is incorrect. The White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge, signed in March by the major hyperscalers (Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and others), commits them to build, bring, or buy the power their data centers need and pay the full cost of that generation and the infrastructure upgrades, so ordinary ratepayers don’t absorb it. Duke Energy signed the expanded pledge in July. In North Carolina, Duke, the Public Staff, and those same companies just filed a Large Load Tariff settlement requiring new large loads to pay upfront for dedicated facilities, post security for upgrades, take service under a separate rate, and meet minimum bills. Those are the opposite of forcing ratepayers to subsidize data centers. SB 266 mainly adjusted carbon targets and cost-recovery rules. It does not require ratepayers to cover data-center costs. Large-load protections are being handled through the tariff process still pending NCUC approval. The post ignores the pledges and the settlement. #ncpol
Not only did the leaders of North Carolina's state legislature not do this themselves, they actually passed a bill - Senate Bill 266 - that did the opposite. SB 266 forces all NC ratepayers to subsidize datacenters through higher bills to Duke Energy. ncnewsline.com/2026/10/27/nc…
