In this article, @SawssanAbouZahr asked a vital question: are human rights universal? Especially in light of the appalling civilian suffering caused by strikes in Rafah, the UK must act to protect human rights and call for a #CeasefireNOW. (🧵1/2) #AllEyesOnRafah
📰In our newest article, @SawssanAbouZahr reflects on the meaning of 'local' #peacebuilding amid atrocities in #Gaza, exploring the importance of international solidarity efforts. ➡️Read it now: peaceinsight.org/en/articles…

As an Israeli military operation has continued for 2 days in Jenin, West Bank, people die because they can’t access hospitals. Yesterday, a man had to carry his 13-year-old son to Khalil Suleiman hospital because Israeli armored cars blocked ambulances. The boy died soon after.

War is devastating, especially when international humanitarian law is ignored. What are these laws, and how do they apply to the hostilities between Israel and Hamas and affiliated armed groups? ⤵️

🔴BREAKING: Israel has given Al Awda Hospital just two hours to evacuate. Our staff are still treating patients. We unequivocally condemn this action, the continued indiscriminate bloodshed and attacks on health care in Gaza. We are trying to protect our staff and patients.

.@UNRWA shelters in #Gaza and northern Gaza are no longer safe. This is unprecedented.   This war should be no exception, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including United Nations buildings, applies to this conflict too. Wars have rules. – at Geneva, Switzerland

Civilian targeting is always a crime, is never legitimate & must always be condemned Civilian targeting over past days across the world - Israel, Gaza, Myanmar, Sudan, Syria - must all be condemned, efforts prioritised to halt violence & save lives, all investigated & prosecuted
While the world's attention is fixed on #Israel & #Gaza, #Assad's regime has surged civilian targeting in NW #Syria. In 5 days, it's hit the following: 10 schools 5 medical clinics 5 mosques 4 markets 4 emergency service HQs 3 farms 3 IDP camps 1 electricity station

the thing about artists and writers is that we’re all slightly unhinged, chaotic, fueled by coffee and revenge and ambition, and I don’t want my art to be made by machines, I want it to be made by messy people who have hated and loved and panicked like the rest of us.

There’s a common thread linking the decline in humanities majors, Hollywood paying its writers pennies and the tech world wanting all writers and painters to be replaced by machines. We’ve entirely forgotten how essential the arts and literature are to a healthy society.

There’s a greed that says the measure of a thing is the money it brings you. But some things have inherent value regardless of the incomes they generate. People are not machines; we need myth and poetry and leisure and learning for its own sake in order to flourish.

The overwhelming majority of refugees have no access to pathways such as resettlement to the UK. The vast majority  of refugees remain in countries neighbouring their own or apply for asylum elsewhere. Only a very small number seek protection in the UK. unhcr.org/uk/news/statement-…

High net immigration figures will be built up into a frenzy in the next weeks. A couple things to remember: - the rise is driven by people on visas, not asylum seekers, who remain a tiny proportion - the immigrants are people who bring huge positives to our communities #r4today
