The latest open weight models run laps around frontier models for cyber security. It’s not that the frontier models are dumb, it’s that they explicitly gimp what they share, hiding the demons in the code. The why does not matter. Protect yourself. Run open models.

My first piece for the Pomp Letter came out today. I explore the big bet @_Lonis_ & his new $70M hedge fund Cambrian Management are making on the AI supply chain. Tldr; - The AI boom has given AI labs & apps 15-40x vals - The supply chain feeding AI is only trading at 1-5x rev - The latter could have the more durable moat with AGI This gap won't last forever, so this is not an issue you want to miss out on. 🎉 Today at @Proof we're launching the first implementation of x401, enabling apps to request proof of who is behind agents interacting with them. This has been a critical unsolved problem, but with x401 we can unlock the legally sensitive flows agents have been blocked from: proof.com/blog/proof-launche…

I produced the Shinobi/Zhao interview and what I saw that day shocked me...
CAPTURE Part 4: THE MACHINE The fourth and final installment is out. Bitcoin Magazine wasn’t just covering the fight over Bitcoin’s future. Its parent operated an Ordinals trading desk, invested in businesses tied to the ecosystem, and maintained editorial policies that exempted parts of that same business. Then came an $80,000/month marketing contract, with an option for Nakamoto Inc. to buy BTC Inc at a valuation tied to its earnings, in a window that included the OP_RETURN fight. Nakamoto exercised the option. Readers were not consistently told about these commercial relationships. A documented investigation into the commercial interests and media infrastructure surrounding the Bitcoin Core controversy. citadel21.com/the-machine

Shinobi was running around the developer conference trying to lock devs in for interviews to create informative content for the public to see into the black box of Bitcoin development. I was shocked. Shinobi being a responsible technical editor and getting work done was not what anyone could've expected. Specifically, I remember Gloria either cold-shouldered him or turned down an interview at first. These dev conferences are an opportunity for developers to get together and talk shop with empathetic peers. They're not closed-doors events persay, but there is an expected informal, guards down, meeting of geeks to be able to chortle at rust jokes together. Contrarily, the online discourse was dominated by the spam debate at this moment in time and an interview about it would, not only be the umpteenth circle around the block, but be taking away from the 99.9% of value that Gloria or any other dev was contributing at that time. These people wake up, work all day on things, and go to sleep, without ever touching anything that has to do with spam. And then all that any non-dev wants to talk to them about is that one thing. Which is FAIR to want to talk about. But do you only care about that one thing? And care nothing about the 99.9999% of what's actually going on? I appreciated Shinobi's approach to getting Gloria to sit down and talk. He might be embarrassed for me to say that he actually put a lot of consideration and sympathy into how he approached her at the end of the day. And him starting off with an apology to her was a continuation of this sentiment that he was respecting the 99.9% of Gloria's daily work that was going unappreciated. It was also showing respect to the event itself as an ephemeral open interchange that is meant to bring more voices in and move development forward rather than be a place where media can pounce on devs when they climb out from under their rocks (respectfully). Or at least, that's my take. @hodlonaut's take was pretty good for the other BTC mag stuff. Some are questioning what new value this article in his series brings. I think it's maybe the clearest example of a common string in his writing: attacking abstract groups instead of holding individuals responsible. He attacked BTC mag. But WTF is BTC mag? If you would've measured who they were 3 years ago they would be completely different from measuring who they are today. Because it was different individuals. It is individuals who do things. Not companies. Not organizations. And as an outside researcher, it's hard to pin down the individual, the action, the motive. A lot easier to point at an abstraction and tie it to another abstraction and then call it illuminati 2.0. For what it's worth, he actually did a good job including lots of individual details. It's just that as a reader we have to discern between when he dances between discrete points of information on one side of the line and then big hand-waves of abstract entities on the other. I can guarantee that on that chaotic day where Shinobi was jumping in and out of circles of conversations in the conference hall and yanking devs in for nearly a dozen interviews, that getting Gloria's interview had nothing to do with some ordinal BS that other people at BTC Inc (not BTC Mag) were doing at the same time somewhere else. This is completely missing how real life unfolds for individuals in our own solipsistic worlds with our own day-to-day motivations and values. There's plenty to hold different individuals responsible for and the article accomplished a lot of that. But this interview, Shinobi, Gloria, has nothing to do with nothing. It was coffee, work, presentations, conversations, time-crunches, ubers, and a brief moment in the midst of all of that to pierce the dev veil.

This is why we collaborated with @Circle, Lightspark, Visa, and Okta, OpenAI, and others in FIDO to create x401, an open protocol that allows services providers to gate activities/content based on verifying who is behind the requests they get from AI/agents: x401.id/
The most important technology problem of the next 5 years: Creating a broadly accepted standard for agents to identify themselves to service providers, so that providers can adjust the way they interface with clients (as compared to human-based traffic). In the interim (i.e., for the next 6 months), there will be a cat-and-mouse game that agents will play -- to circumvent detection and maintain their product's utility during this growth phase. However, this will only be a stopgap and it will not be the terminal state of the world.

This falls apart by the third paragraph. AI is a human tool. Humans do 10,000 actions per unit time USING AI. Hell, a computer computes X amount of actions just by a human pressing the "enter" key. You're saying an "enter" key that does more than another "enter" key is the problem? Does language derive from our AMOUNT of processes? Is that what sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom? Our brains are bigger? Or is it the TYPE of processes? A universal, naturally emerging syntax, or grid, that we're able to use to perceive, think and relay through? We will always be able to amplify what we already do. LLM's are one more power-up tool, not the last, in our ability to amplify the special thing that uniquely exists only in us. LLM's are stupid. They're a mindless amplifier. Set your sights on guarding an AMOUNT of amplification rather than the type that originated it and you're no better than our crippling medicine system that targets the symptom instead of the cause. LLM's are used for expression. Don't be so stupid to limit individuals' expression. We've seen that playbook. The single biggest difference between humans and AI agents is NOT the AMOUNT of actions. This thinking leads to shackling the ACTUAL difference: exercising our wills.
