Mariam, killed by Israeli strike today, had the chance to leave Gaza to be with her son but she chose to stay to report and to look after her parents, her friends told us. She gave a kidney to her father. Her mother, unable to get proper treatment, died from cancer 4 months ago

“Per population, the death toll of Palestinian journalists is roughly equivalent to the killing of 8,500 U.S. newsroom employees.”
Horrifying figures. Every US news room should be condemning this. watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/…

Heartbreaking loss
All of us at Drop Site News are deeply saddened by the loss of Ahlam Al Nafed, a journalist and photographer who spent the last 15 months fearlessly documenting the horrors in Gaza. Ahlam was a trusted source, providing detailed reporting, video, and information to Drop Site News and others.
For the past 100 days, Ahlam chronicled the genocide in northern Gaza, capturing evidence of Israeli war crimes from the besieged Indonesian Hospital. Through her words and images, she ensured that atrocities which might have been silenced were brought to light, allowing the world to witness the brutal reality unfolding there.
Today, Ahlam was killed by Israeli forces as she was walking to Al Shifa Hospital.
Ahlam is survived by her sister Reem, a nurse at the Indonesian Hospital. Just last week, Ahlam tragically lost her father, who passed away from a chronic medical condition after being unable to access treatment due to Israel’s ongoing blockade. To Reem, and to all who love Ahlam, we extend our deepest condolences.
Ahlam’s work documenting the attacks on the Indonesian Hospital was irreplaceable. She was one of the last remaining voices in northern Gaza—a voice the world desperately needed. Without her, the full extent of Israel’s actions might never have been known.

In awe of local journalists in Gaza who are filming, feeding footage, writing articles, documenting deaths, seeing bodies pile up while working to deadlines with no sleep, little power, water & food in order to report on on a catastrophe that is happening to them & their families

Sacramento folks: There is an additional respite shelter at 2641 Kent Drive in Carmichael open overnight. Not sure why it hasn’t been advertised, but there isn’t anyone here yet. @shomelessunion @DCRSacramento @SacramentoOES

Whoever in midtown Sacramento is spending the debate just blasting Pavement at an impossible volume.... I'm with you.
As I'm reporting on accessibility issues, I want to share something a source brought to my attention the other day, which is that many websites aren't accessible to people who use screen readers.
Example: Photo taken from above with cat, lizard, and human legs on couch. On the left, an orange cat naps on a white blanket and a tan pillow. On the right, the bare feet of a white person rest on a faux leather cushion. On their jean-clad legs rests a tan and grey striped skink
Obviously accessibility, online and otherwise, goes way beyond this. But I think committing to adding alt text is a small way to start thinking about how science journalism and #scicomm can be available to everybody.
