Truth is, they were never going to put Batman in an R-rated live action body horror movie. I don't think they'd ever put a tentpole character like Batman in any R-rated film (the closest you'd get is the Reeves film). The most it'd be is a silhouette tease á la CC or a name drop.
By the way I don’t think Batman being absent from Clayface is to the film’s detriment. Hell the fact that the movie works so extremely well without Batman is a testament to its own quality in my opinion.
But Batman’s absence is felt, and it is weird.
Clayface commits two high profile murders where he rips out one guy’s esophagus and then massacres an entire nightclub with the death of a prominent figure in the Gotham underworld. The fact that we don’t even get a hint of Batman investigating any of this is super distracting and leads me to believe he’s either extremely slow or Gotham is just very overpopulated with supervillain crime activity, which the movie itself doesn’t really try to convince you of.
Even Doctor Phosphorus’ time as a crime lord was extremely short lived😭
