A statue in tribute to Haym Solomon stands on Wacker Drive in Chicago. It has been a source of pride for Chicago Jews for many generations.
Did you know that is was a Jewish patriot who helped finance America's fight for independence? This morning at 11 AM, a special ceremony in Philadelphia honors Haym Salomon, a Jewish hero whose financial support helped the American colonies secure victory in the Revolutionary War. Held at historic Washington Square on the anniversary of the 1781 victory at Yorktown, the commemoration celebrates Salomon's remarkable contributions to American independence and his commitment to religious liberty. 🇲🇦 Morocco has inaugurated a new Museum of Jewish Moroccan Culture in Fez, celebrating centuries of Jewish life and heritage in the country. Located in the historic Mellah, one of Morocco’s oldest Jewish quarters, the museum showcases rare manuscripts, religious objects and historical treasures that tell the story of Moroccan Jewry. The inauguration was attended by Serge Berdugo, President of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco, who highlighted the museum’s role in preserving Jewish memory and fostering dialogue between communities. Just 100 metres from the Museum of Islamic Arts, the new institution stands as a powerful symbol of Morocco’s rich Jewish-Muslim heritage and shared history.

I was honored to award 6 Israeli heroes of the flydubai flight with the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism. I look forward to presenting the heroic Captain Smit Machchhar of India with the same award, once he fully recovers. The people of Israel salute you all!

Three years ago, we had no idea that our lives were about to change. Tonight, we are celebrating the same holiday we celebrated that evening, before waking up on Simchat Torah morning - the morning of the massacre. I was awake that night. I couldn’t sleep. By the time the first siren sounded, I was already completely immersed in what was happening. The first thing I did, as always, was check the terrorist channels I knew well. The first rocket launch had already been filmed. Then came more footage - motorcycles racing forward. I didn’t really understand what I was seeing. I saved it. What came after that footage was hell. A hell we are still living in today. What followed exposed us to a world of unimaginable cruelty - the screams, the horrors, the blood, the bodies, the smell. So many prayers. So many pleas. So many we couldn’t reach in time. So many we wanted to save, if only we could have. All of us were fighting for our lives. For days, we barely left our homes. Anyone who went outside was considered brave. We prepared our weapons and waited for them to come for us too. Every movement looked suspicious. And we all swore that, even at the cost of our own lives, we would not let them take us. We planned our deaths. Men and women, adults and children - all of us. We prepared for a battle we had never asked for. The heroes who rose that day saved our lives. They stopped the terrorists from reaching the center and the north of the country - from reaching us. At the cost of their lives, we survived. Mothers and fathers watched their children walk out the door for the last time to protect us, never to return. And ever since, I have done everything I can to make sure we remember them. To make sure we remember what happened. To make sure we never forget, and that their deaths were not in vain. Because if we ever forget October 7, we have no right to exist. This is not a slogan. It is an entire ideology I live by. It is the belief burning in my blood. It is the belief that must burn within every one of us, everywhere in the world. History will never forget where we stood. And it is our duty to make sure: Never again. Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach to everyone.

Sukkot is one of the most joyful festivals in Judaism, centered around the sukkah, a gathering place where we bring together family, friends, and community. Every Jew and every community has the right to celebrate it safely. Wishing you a Chag Sukkot Sameach and Shabbat Shalom.

I am grateful to the IDF, to the medical team at Shaare Zedek who are now fighting to save the life of Neria Dov ben Chana, and for the prayers of the people of Israel. I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe that when the people of Israel unite, miracles happen. Neria needs a miracle. Neria continued to serve in the reserves after losing his older brother, Moshe Yedidya Leiter, of blessed memory. Since October 7th, he has served hundreds of days in the reserves on multiple fronts. Palestinian terrorism seeks to uproot the people of Israel from their land. They choose death - we choose life.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the Jewish year - a day of fasting, prayer, reflection and forgiveness. Once a year, Israel comes to a near standstill. The roads empty. Businesses close. The noise of everyday life fades. From the streets of Tel Aviv to Jerusalem’s Old City, a unique quiet settles across the country. A day to pause, look inward and start anew. This is Israel on Yom Kippur. 🤍🇮🇱

My father didn't place this story on Yom Kippur, but I experience it as a Yom Kippur story. The declaration is the declaration of the closing moments of the Neilah service. The refusal to condemn God, we pray, will be reciprocated by God's refusal to condemn us. And the holiness is the holiness of a people determined to live free. G'mar Chatima Tovah -- may we all be inscribed in the book of life. (From A Jew Today, 1978)
