Nazis gonna Nazi
Former Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Ukraine) actually just posted something I agree with. Former British PM Winston Churchill absolutely could have shortened World War Two by four to five years.
All he had to do was accept Hitler's surprising peace offers in July 1940 or May 1941 to withdraw German forces from 81 percent of German-occupied Europe (and North Africa) in exchange for an end to the war with the UK and a free hand to lead his long-planned 'international crusade' against the Soviet Union. Doing so likely would have saved the lives of six million Jews who died during the Jewish Holocaust.
Similarly, Zelensky could have ended the war in April 2022 by signing the Istanbul Agreement mandating the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine's pre-war controlled territories in exchange for Ukraine's neutrality outside of NATO and partial demilitarization. History is constantly repeating itself and those who fail to learn from the mistakes of history are condemned to repeat them.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Hitler's July 1940 Reichstag speech was a vague appeal with no specific withdrawal terms or 81% figure. Hess's 1941 flight was unauthorized with only general proposals; detailed claims match only the poster's accounts, not records. ibiblio.org/pha/policy/194… britannica.com/biography/Rudo… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art…

Tearing down the East Wing and ruining the Reflecting Pool are bad, but symbolically so. This makes the experience of living in DC as a normal person – turning a place for cycling, fishing, birding, picnicking, and cheap golf into a playground for the rich – materially worse.
I’m always surprised how much the rich hate the poor… and I grew up poor

Trust me, I’d prefer a world where not everyone golfs. Have you tried getting a good tee time lately?
1. Will it be cheap? (No.)
2. Will it constantly be closed for VIPs and events? (Yes.)
3. Is it eliminating a bunch of free and widely used parkland and activity space? (Of course.)

Looks like what runners and cyclists feared could come true: Trump’s plans for a new golf course at East Potomac Park seem to eliminate the existing three-mile roads that circles the island. It’s a popular destination for running, riding, and driving access to Hains Point.
New: Trump says that East Potomac Golf Course will close on Nov 15 for the redesign by Tom Fazio.
“Restoration work will begin on the Fazio Design on November 15th, when the old Course will be closed to play. The new Course will be opened in approximately 15 months.”
This comes as there is a heated legal dispute right now about whether the government can redesign the course.

"It’s sort of the worst-case scenario" @WABADC exec. director tells @washsunmetro
“The recreation landscape [will be] so horrifically changed ... There’s no room for biking, bird-watching, running, for all of the public uses that Hains point has had for 100 years.”
NEW: President @realDonaldTrump confirmed his much-discussed plans to build a “world championship” golf course at East Potomac Park in a social media post Sunday, despite an ongoing lawsuit aimed at halting the proposed overhaul.

This design appears to completely eliminate the much-beloved loop road and public park at Hains Point, and cut down the cherry trees which line the road. The park is a public space used by tens of thousands of Washingtonians and heavily visited by tourists.
/photos not my own.
Yeah, wealthy folks like Trump think they should own everything. They are actively hostile to the idea of public property.
I swear to God, the press better never stop asking him about when it is acceptable for elected officials to take envelopes full of cash...
I guess the official Green Party position is that taking bribes is totally fine. (I have yet to hear anyone defending this outcome explain why they think this was not a bribe.)
The rich profit more from indirect benefits than any group in society, but are the first to turn around and deny the existence indirect benefits.
The government should subsidize liberal arts degrees because having an educated society benefits everyone...

When it isn't paid back (and is then forgiven), a government loan is a subsidy.
