‘Show Jesus so they can Know Jesus’
I'll never look at avocados the same way again.
We’ve driven by this particular gas station a hundred times. Actually, probably hundreds of times. Almost every time we stop, there’s a young boy selling avocados. Usually, there’s a young girl with him, but today he’s alone.
Sadly, it’s common in Guatemala to see kids selling on the streets.
As I filled the truck with gas, he was sitting on a three-foot concrete wall off in the distance with a basket of avocados.
My wife said, “You should buy some avocados.”
The thing is, I know we have avocados at home, but I can tell she doesn’t want to buy avocados for home; she wants to buy avocados for love.
“No way. Do you want me to grab you a bottle of water?”
“I want some avocados.”
I rolled my eyes and walked inside. I know. I know. I’m sorry. We were in a hurry.
When I walked outside, all I could hear was, “I want some avocados,” rolling around in my head.
“How much are the avocados?”
“Un quetzal.” (Thirteen U.S. cents.)
I sat down next to him.
“No school today?”
“School hasn’t started yet.”
“What grade are you in?”
“Third grade.”
“Do you have brothers and sisters?”
“With me, we are eleven.”
“Is that your sister who’s usually here with you?”
“Yes. She’s taking care of my mom today.”
“How old are you?”
“I’m eleven. Today. Today, I’m eleven.”
“WHAT? Today’s your birthday?”
I can sniff out a hustler a mile away, and he’s never used the “it’s my birthday” line before. I believe him.
He smiled. “It is.”
“What’s your name?”
“Santiago.”
“Happy birthday, Santiago. Why are you selling avocados today?”
“My mom needs insulin. She’s diabetic.”
MY HEART CRACKED IN TWO.
“How many avocados do you have?”
He counted every avocado he had and said, “Thirty-three.”
Thirty-three avocados at one quetzal each is about $4. All I had was a hundred quetzal bill, which is about $12.50.
“I’ll take them all. You can keep the change. Happy birthday, Santiago.”
I know I’ll see him again. Next time, I plan on stopping when I have more time. I’ll see if I can visit his home and meet his family.
I didn’t talk about God. I didn’t stop by so I could preach. I just asked questions. I tried to get to know a little about him.
It’s hard to love your neighbor if you don’t KNOW your neighbor.
I didn’t have this ulterior motive to get to know him so I could share the gospel, either.
Will I share the gospel?
Most likely.
But that’s not why we bought all his avocados.
We bought all his avocados because my wife is compassionate.
We bought all his avocados because we’re led by the Holy Spirit.
We bought all his avocados because we love Jesus.
And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” - Jesus Christ the Messiah.
🙏🏽
I’m currently studying the Book of Acts;
the story of the unstoppable spread of the gospel,
through the power of the Holy Spirit,
and the faithfulness of early believers.
To understand it better, I’ve been watching 3-4 sermons a week, diving into commentaries, and spending 10-15 hours studying the Bible each week.
If you’d like my notes, leave a 🙏 and I’ll send them your way!
(It would mean a lot to me if you shared this post)
Wait, @jrpsaki just told me this is not happening and is not an issue, I’m confused

Shocking! @mcuban actually doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
But he’s not tall enough to play in the NFL…🤷♂️
In today's @AZCardinals victory, Kyler Murray (@K1) became the 2nd player in @NFL history with 250+ passing yards, 50+ rushing yards and a 158.3 passer rating - the highest attainable mark - in a single game.
He joins Ken Anderson, who accomplished the feat on Nov. 3, 1974.
