Yes, it works in pancreatic cancer.
🚨📣 big news at #ESMO26: 🧵1/MASTERPLAN RCT shows adding SABR to perioperative chemotherapy for high-risk localized #pancreatic cancer ⬆️⬆️ median overall survival to 22.0 months vs 14.0 months (HR 0.45). #PancreaticCancer #RadOnc @TROGfightcancer in press @TheLancetOncol - thelancet.com/journals/lanon…
Alternatively, Pope Leo could have stereotactic ablative radiotherapy if his tumor is small, peripherally located, medium/high risk or refusal for lobectomy. 2025 ASTRO presentation comparing SABR vs VATS showed no inferiority in overall survival at 10 years. Manuscript will be published soon.
Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
While we had hoped for a different diagnosis, the fact that he was able to undergo a lobectomy is encouraging. Surgery is generally pursued when lung cancer appears localized and potentially curable.
Final pathology will help determine prognosis and whether additional treatment is needed.
Wishing the Holy Father a smooth and speedy recovery.

In appropriate patients, appropriate times, appropriate locations, radiotherapy will make significant impact to improve patient outcomes.
When I say ‘just a little radiation’ and he knows exactly where this is going…
@JoeChangMD #DCLung26 🤣
As we confront the world’s number-one cancer killer, we need novel biological insights and cutting-edge technologies to improve clinical outcomes for patients with lung cancer. The great news is that lung cancer survival has nearly doubled since I joined the field of thoracic radiation oncology 24 years ago.

SIX-YEAR OVERALL SURVIVAL OF NIVOLUMAB FOLLOWING STEREOTACTIC ABLATIVE RADIOTHERAPY IN EARLY-STAGE NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER: RANDOMIZED I-SABR TRIAL

This randomized phase II trial evaluated SABR ☢️ alone versus SABR plus four doses of nivolumab (I-SABR) in 141 patients with node-negative, early-stage or isolated recurrent #NSCLC 🫁 .
➡️ After nearly 6 years of follow-up, I-SABR significantly improved overall survival (70% vs. 56%) and event-free survival (53% vs. 32%), with manageable toxicity and low rates of severe nivolumab-related adverse events.
✅️ Findings support combining SABR with immunotherapy in appropriately selected patients.

Thank you so much for the great summary and wonderful picture for our I-SABR study.
SBRT with immunotherapy significantly boosts long-term cancer survival. The 6-year overall survival reached 69% with the combined approach, compared to 55% with radiation alone. This major improvement is driven by a powerful, sustained immune response! #ASTRO26
I am so glad that Bruce received this well deserved recognition. I am still missing him whenever I go to my office in MDACC. We used to be the neighbors for our office.
Congrats to @UTMDAnderson Professor Emeritus Dr. Bruce Minsky for being awarded the @ASTRO_org Gold Medal! #ASTRO26

I am honored to see that I made #ASTRO26 @ASTRO_org daily news.
For low and intermediate localized prostate cancer, which TX is better, surgery vs SBRT? Phase III randomized PACE-A showed similar biological or clinical failure rate and OS. Side effects seem favorable in SBRT. Overall, patients have two very effective TX options.
What is the optimal RT for brain mets in small cell lung cancer. NRG -CC009 compared SRS vs HA-WBRT. Although SRS doesn’t improve neurocognative function but it improves OS. SRS will be an option (preferred?) for brain mets in small cell lung cancer.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

Combined immunotherapy with radiotherapy is exciting but also challenging. Biology-based clinical trial design and optimization is crucial.
LIVE from #ASTRO26: Joe Chang, MD, (@JoeChangMD) of @UTMDAnderson discusses the randomized I-SABR trial, which looks at adding four doses of nivolumab to SABR to improve 6-year overall survival (70% vs. 56%) and event-free survival (53% vs. 32%) in early-stage, node-negative NSCLC. The treatment had generally manageable toxicity, supporting further study of I-SABR and optimal immunotherapy sequencing. #MoffittASTRO26
I am pleased to share the results of our phase II randomized I-SABR study @ASTRO_org 2026 which demonstrate improved overall survival (OS) when adding four doses of immunotherapy to SABR in early-stage NSCLC. These exciting findings are associated with the persistent activation of cytotoxic T cells for up to 6.5 years. Further optimization of I-SABR approaches will guide future research and clinical practice.

Dr. Joe Chang shared six-year data from the Phase 2 I-SABR trial. He also shared that patients who received both nivolumab and SBRT treatment showed increased activity of cancer-targeting CD8+ T cells: spr.ly/6018BGWA4O (2/2) #ASTRO26 #EndCancer
