And of course - full kudos to @SadiqKhan and the team for using his trademark political courage to get on and do something about revitalising Oxford Street - not just accepting managed decline or listening to the loudest voices!

Soon the West will look back and wonder how it allowed itself to be dominated by a vain, bragging and fraudulent old crook

Just because we’ve recited the right creed or saluted the right flag doesn’t mean that our heart is pure, open, free, or even in love with anybody. If our religion isn’t finally creating loving people, then what good is it? buff.ly/8c9be65

Marco Rubio wants the West to rediscover what made it great.
But what truly distinguishes Western civilization is not its military power or national pride, as Rubio suggests, but its intellectual and political traditions.
My take:

In this candid conversation, Lodro reflects on how practice helped him remain present through loss. Ivan and Lodro also revisit the early years of Lodro’s writing and consider what it means for a book to make a difference in even one person’s life.

It’s possible that I’m nuts. But after the horrors of the last three years, and the daily torrents of hate on this site, I *still* believe that most people want to live in a world where all of us treat each other with kindness and mutual respect. And I’ll keep working for that.

NEW: Ten years on, Prime Minister @andyburnham tells @campbellclaret & @RoryStewartUK that there was ‘clear’ Russian interference in the Brexit vote.
FINALLY after years of cover-ups & denials from the highest levels of the UK govt. That in itself deserves an inquiry.

Trump’s diesel deal with Putin makes no sense (it’s also immoral since it will fund the ailing Kremlin war machine).
The US has no need of Russian diesel. It already refines more than enough for domestic demand — with 1.5m b/d for export.
Russia has no diesel to export. Ukrainian drones have taken out a third of Russian refining capacity, turning Russia into a net importer of diesel (from India).
The volumes involved are derisory. The initial Russian offer = 2.2m barrels. The US consumes 3.5m b/d.
The price of diesel at the US pump is between $6/6.50. That won’t change before the midterms. The deal does nothing to help Trump in these elections.
But it bolsters Putin and undermines Ukraine.

Whitechapel, London, around 1900
The streets were crowded with costermongers, market stalls, horse-drawn carts and people living and working within a remarkably small area. Whitechapel was home to a large working-class population, including many Jewish immigrants who had arrived from Eastern Europe.
Poverty and overcrowding could be severe, but this was also a bustling community of shops, workshops, markets and street traders, a side of Whitechapel often overshadowed by its association with Jack the Ripper.

A statue of Nelson Mandela has been unveiled in Glasgow city centre, nearly 40 years after the city renamed a street in his honour 🙌
In a fitting tribute to the revolutionary and former President of South Africa, the sculpture now stands on a plinth of South African granite on Nelson Mandela Place, formerly St George's Place
