What’s inside Apple’s $129 Thunderbolt cable? We CT scanned one to find out, and compared it to some cheaper cables… 🧵

Last year, we CT scanned the Haribo 20,000 mAh power bank and found significant battery defects. Now its manufacturer, DC Hong Kong Global, is bringing it back after revamping their supply chain and adding inspection steps. Head to the link in bio for the full story.
Edward Elgar wrote this transcription of Bach's C-minor Fantasia & Fugue. It's very Elgar! Warm, rich, expressive, with darkness gathering at the edges.

Bach was himself a transcriptionist, of his own music and others'. Here's Vivaldi's Concerto in A minor for two violins, transcribed by Bach for pipe organ.

That's not to say that Bach's instrumentation doesn't matter. It's similarly brilliant, and among other things his economy stands out—chords in his organ works that sound like they have a dozen voices often have just four. But his fundamental musical ideas are so profound at a basic level that they can be transformed over and over again with new dimensions emerging each time.
Leopold Stokowski transcribed Bach's C-minor Passacaglia & Fugue. It's a completely different piece when played by an orchestra!

Lots of great composers have transcribed Bach's organ works for orchestra. None other than Arnold Schoenberg—already several years into his twelve-tone era—reworked Bach's E-flat Prelude & Fugue (the "St. Anne" from the Clavier-Übung III)
The original has one of the most majestic openings that Bach wrote, and it's a major-key standout among his more familiar minor-key masterpieces.

Bach's D-minor Toccata & Fugue is probably the most familiar work for pipe organ, but is just as natural on the violin!
The piece was likely written for organ, but it's structurally dissimilar to Bach's other organ works so it has generated lots of conjecture. Peter Williams made the case in the 1980s that it had been written for violin and later transcribed for organ.

Bach's music is remarkable for how it withstands transcription. Bach's bare notes—irrespective of instrumentation or a performer's expression—are so inventive and full of meaning at every level of structure that transcription only brings out new meaning. Examples below…

Our $500 Dyson CameraJet toothbrush died four minutes into its first use, just like other owners have been reporting. We CT scanned it and found a 0.4 mm tear in the jet tube that carries water or mouthwash up to the brush head, letting water flood the housing around the electronics. Would you pay $500 for a toothbrush?
