France’s latest bright idea: tax internet data.
Yes, really. €0.055 per gigabyte delivered to users in France, under an amendment just adopted by the National Assembly.
What the actual fuck are we doing?
I run a content agency. Moving big files is part of our everyday work. Footage from a shoot, photos for a client, projects sent to an editor, backups when something goes wrong.
At the proposed rate, before caps:
→ 150 GB of footage: €8.25.
→ 200 GB of photos and videos: €11.
→ 1 TB of cloud archives: €55.
→ 2 TB restored after a drive failure: €110.
Those are gross tax calculations for the provider, NOT automatic charges to users.
But are we seriously supposed to ignore the possibility that providers will pass some of that cost on through higher prices?
I already pay for the tools. I pay for the storage. I pay for the connection. Now I get to wonder whether moving our own work around will make those services more expensive.
And here’s how the vote went:
11 for.
10 against.
14 abstentions.
35 MPs participated in an Assembly with 577 seats. Eleven yes votes were enough to adopt the amendment.
That honestly blows my mind.
We’re told to innovate, embrace AI, improve productivity and make French businesses more competitive.
So I spend my time finding clients, building a team, investing in equipment and testing new tools.
Then I read this.
A huge video file can be hours of work that a small team still needs to finish, deliver and get paid for.
I love building a business here. I want to keep growing it here.
But this constant search for something else to tax is exhausting.
Give us some room to build.

We’re missing the point here. In France, Mao is taught in school as a dictator. Why is it so shocking that Mbappé would react to his portrait? I genuinely don’t get the outrage.
The reaction to Mbappé’s joke about China and Mao is wild. The guy laughed about himself and it turned into a whole controversy.
Then we wonder why pro athletes stick to bland, scripted answers.
