So poetry is in the news as even the Senedd vetoed such memorable (yuck) lines as "cursed seeds scything at Gazan children. Weed them out!". But this does give the chance to plug a (the?) canonical poem about Welsh politics (and Liverpool lawyers), one of Chesterton's best.

Many astute observers have noted that @GMJSindarov and I are at the same hotel in Cyprus for the same dates, and they're questioning if I'm on Sindarov's World Championship Prep Team. While I'm not, I am advising him in a limited capacity about 2.Ke2. The OG prep was for an eventual WC match against Magnus, but as that won't be happening, the world deserves to have this prep in the open, so I'm sharing it. I've also heard that Magnus is sharing his 2.Ke2 prep with @DGukesh. Good Luck to Sindarov and Gukesh, may the best 2.Ke2 win!

Try and hallucinate the expression below
String theory is what happens when an intelligent system is starved of sensory input and starts hallucinating. Intelligence needs grounding. For this reason, intelligence is practically never the bottleneck to solving impactful problems. The bottleneck is iterated contact with reality.

Given I work at Oxford and have not been told this, I had a look ( shorturl.at/mu5sR) There is very little here -- this is guidance for formal communications, it's common sense not to use idioms when writing official-ese. Toby: put your noggin in gear and use your loaf.

When worrying about current two-tier justice, the death of Lord Archer is a reminder that the old ways also had two-tier justice: i.e the famously biased wouldn't-I-like-to-roger-the-plaintiff's-wife judicial summing up in Archer vs The Daily Star Same physics, sign reversed.

I don't agree with all the details here but this is a useful thread and the overall conclusion is correct 1/9
Quick thread on university finances and the next phase of the crisis engulfing English higher education. TL;DR: structural factors mean ‘elite’ institutions are much more vulnerable than people realise.

But this isn't a hard cash cost to the university which owns the buildings, and neither is the space easily fungible to cash -- you can't just rent out the space occupied by an undergraduate chemistry laboratory to Starbucks. 8/9

There are extra costs associated to lab subjects (reagents / equipment etc) but a lot of these supposed extra costs are not real costs that involve the expenditure of real money. 9/9

Even when you think you've seen it all in academia, the list of proposed possible titles for writing a Rhodes recommendation letter is wild.....

Many valid views on this, but personally I consider myself much more British than English (although born in England and have lived here all my life). Too much Irish Catholic ancestry in me.
What makes someone English?
