If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Today marks 20 years since Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow. She recognized Putin's true nature earlier than most—and the regime could never erase the truth she died to tell.

The state of British TV in a nutshell 😂
Most TV is just this now.

Some welcome clarity from PM Burnham. He has pledged not to call a general election until one is due in 2029 Burnham is clear re 2029: “That’s when the next election will be” Categorically rules out an early election. Asked about May 2027: “Absolutely not” So much for all those pundits who told us an election was imminent — and interpreted every poll/event through that lens. Not me.

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

I’ve just spoken with Caolan, far too close for comfort. Glad they are ok 🙏 Russia continues its campaign of terror against civilians, yet much of the international community remains disturbingly muted.
A missile just crashed into the building I was sleeping in. Built up residential complex intentionally attacked in Odesa. The building is still on fire. Barbaric terrorism.

Kyiv is getting terrorised every hour and the world is already used to it like it’s the new normal. When Nazis bombed London for 57 days we didn’t call it London’s new normal we called it the Blitz. This should be no different.

We had a discussion on today’s Fourcast Indicators pod about key aspects of this but Jim has added some elements to the mix. Like him, I would say this is a worrying moment nb with such unsettled global bond markets
We are seeing disturbing steps toward the horizontal escalation of the wars in Ukraine and Iran. 1- Russia is expanding its hybrid war against Europe 2- Europe/NATO are struggling to unite in response 3- North Korea is deploying more troops and now missile batteries to Europe 4- Russia is supplying missile technology and intelligence to Iran which it can use to target U.S. bases, Gulf allies and Israel 5- Iran is supplying advanced drones to Russia which (like ballistic missiles) are hard for Ukraine to take out 6- China remains on Russia’s side every step of the way 7- The US is largely absent with the danger that Russia and China read that as an invitation to further escalate

There are no flights over Ukraine because of russia. Soon, there will be no flights over russia because of russia. If they don’t like that, then they can stop the war.

This is the right call…
If we’re still using oil and gas (which we are) importing it instead of producing it at home doesn’t change the climate impact. It does change who gets the jobs, who gets the tax revenues to fund our public services and who controls our energy security and national resilience. This is absolutely the right call.

A few things happening at once that people should connect. Russia is now linked to the arson attacks on the Prime Minister's house and car last year. Shocker. And we all saw what happened the moment that story broke. Our feeds flooded with a different story about who the men were and why they did it. That's the operation. The arson is one half. The disinformation campaign is the other. Flood the zone, muddy the water, get the country shouting at itself instead of asking who is behind it. And at the same time, a chunk of the accounts pushing Scottish independence on X went dark the night Israel hit Iran's nuclear sites. Ask yourself why. Why would hostile states be interested in sowing division across the country? This is exactly what I mean when I say defence is the thread underneath everything now. Again, it isn't tanks on a border. It's an arson attack on the PM's front door and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns in the replies. It's the argument about breaking up our country being run out of Tehran. This is why resilience matters. And it's bigger than just factchecking a tweet. It's energy we can rely on. Industry we actually own. Institutions that are rock solid. Communities that don't split and fracture the moment someone pushes them. A country that is built to take a punch. That's the job now.

I'm not sure many people have processed the importance of Britain's defence spending crisis. What should have been a waypoint on a journey of revival has instead become another one in the arc of decline 👇

Elon Musk has today updated the formula that decides if you see this tweet. Each tweet is scored. S=Σ (probability of reaction × value of reaction) A like = 0.5 points. A reply = 13.5. A full argument? 75+ That’s why outrage travels faster than facts. thetimes.com/comment/columni…
