The PM was away today, so his deputy answered instead.

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.
As is only right and fair, below is @mpmwilko's response to my email about his leaflet.
Yes, I was a Lib Dem as a teenager (a long time ago now). We all make mistakes when we're young, some do drugs, I joined the Lib Dems!
I do work for an MP as it states on my Facebook page. I've never hidden this as I'm proud of my work. I don't want to be a career politician. Max is the one who was a local councillor for years before becoming an MP.

I think it's dawning on Tory defectors to Reform that they backed the wrong horse. They’re desperate for that not to be the case, hence their increasingly desperate attacks on Badenoch etc, but their descent into the gutter makes Reform's demise more, not less, likely.

Interesting. Been saying for a while that I think @KemiBadenoch will be our next Prime Minister. She speaks in common-sense language that resonates with voters, and is very likeable. Burnham already struggling, Reform/Greens toast, Lib Dems irrelevant.

Pollster note: The changes are within the margin of error, so it's difficult to distinguish signal from noise, but I suspect there is some degree of "conference bounce" there, with the Tories getting a boost from their coverage, and Labour declining again as the temporary impact of their own conference fades.
It may well be a temporary Tory boost, but for the record it means this is the first time that we have had Reform back in third place since 2024 (it’s technically the first time since early 2024 – but we didn’t poll between the election and January 2025 while we were reviewing methods, so we don’t know exactly when Reform overtook the Tories).
Safe for an F1 race, acceptable for Visit Rwanda to sponsor an English football club, but apparently it’s neither safe or acceptable to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda. Go figure 🙃

It’s only right Reeves lost her job given the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their jobs as a result of her NI hike on businesses!
Just when I thought Reform couldn’t sink any lower they’ve managed to make the murder of an old woman all about them. Shameful.

Actually it wasn’t. Dame Heather Hallet found *no* evidence of cronyism or corruption on the part of ministers or officials. Mistakes *were* made. Honest mistakes. I take full responsibility for that. But the allegations of corruption are unfounded nonsense

I think if, in the week after Jo Cox's death, the BBC had invited an activist on to say that Jo was bad for believing in immigration and that Brexit supporters were the real victims, that activist would have been shamed into hiding if not emigrating. This is grotesque

You called me a racist in the Commons - and refused to withdraw.
You said the “Islamophobia” definition would not be used to silence discussion of religion - you lied.
You said defining “Islamophobia” would not be conflated with racism - yet that's what you did.
You're right - when people speak, they reveal who they really are.
Complain about British Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square — stay a Tory Shadow Minister.
Complain about Badenoch’s disregard for human rights and climate change — lose the Tory whip.
When people show you who they are, believe them.
