A lion of Taita Hills — part of something much bigger. The lions seen around Taita Hills are part of the wider Tsavo population, one of Kenya’s most important lion strongholds. The 2025 wildlife census estimated 448 lions across the Tsavo Conservation Area — nearly 18% of Kenya’s recorded lion population. What makes Taita especially important is its connectivity. Lions can move between Taita Hills, neighbouring conservancies and ranches, and the wider Tsavo ecosystem. For a lion, protecting one place is never enough.
