Few people are talking about it but the work the Austin City council is doing right now on housing and parking is one of the most important things Democrats have done this year. Mark my words- if Democrats don’t kick NIMBYism to the curb young voters will stop voting.

On the Planning Commission, CM Zo Qadri has appointed Joao Paulo Connolly, the organizing director for Austin Justice Coalition who has been active in pro-housing efforts in recent years, most notably a campaign last year in support of a permanent supportive housing development in the Hancock neighborhood. This isn't Connolly's first rodeo on PC; he was also Greg Casar's appointee to the panel for a while. Connolly replaces Kathie Tovo's appointee, Carmen Llanes Pulido, who was a big skeptic of new market-rate housing. CM Ryan Alter is appointing Felicity Maxwell, an urbanist activist and board member of AURA. Maxwell replaces Robert Schneider, Ann Kitchen's appointee. Schneider was a land use moderate. Maxwell will be far more aggressive in pushing new housing, compact & connected
