Physint is a shock. You don’t sign a Kojima game for the profit margin. It’s a credibility play. Strong win for Xbox

One is anime, the other isn't.
The stigma against anime style games is real. Btw, play Metaphor ReFantazio. It's an excellent JRPG.

1. Terrible, dishonest reporting from IGN.
2. Shocking how many gullible people there are in the comments thinking Xbox would be the savior of true physical games.
3. Even if this wild speculation turned out being true, it wouldn't move the needle in any real world market way.
Digital Foundry says sources have told them that Microsoft is planning to continue support for physical game discs with the aim of prioritizing backward compatibility. bit.ly/4gaLLpg

If PS6 is going to cost close to $1000, I think Sony needs as much good will from its most dedicated fans as possible.
It’s often the hardcore fans that evangelize something and influence a wider audience to pick it up. So I think Sony should also listen to its most dedicated fans too IMO.

With all due respect to this guy, pointing out there are more digital only games on PS5 vs games that have both a digital and physical release and calling it an "availability bias" doesn't make much sense here.
The reason there are more digital only games than physical + digital games is because a lot of games simply don't justify the cost of a physical release anymore.
The truth is the ability to release digitally has expanded the market significantly to the point there are more games releasing on console than any prior generation and Sony now earns more from digital add on content like DLC than it does from digital or physical full game sales.
This is just where the spend is shifting and has been for years. Even if you just look at games with both a physical and digital release, the data still shows a higher digital skew. Looking at certain games that are bundled (Bundles with a digital game still count as physical sales to Sony) or UK first week sales (When physical is highest and then declines in the following weeks) misses the point.
Yes, there is a physical market that exists and even I've said previously I was surprised that Sony made the announcement this year because I personally think 70m unit sales of physical PlayStation games in FY2025 shows there is enough of a market to support them for a few more years.
The position that Sony is taking is that losing any die-hard physical only fan in 2028 won't have an impact on PlayStation earnings, and the data does back them up on that. Right now, given the current macroeconomic environment, Sony is focusing on players that are price insensitive, in favor of digital convenience, and willing to spend more than they were last year on games vs bringing new players in.
At the end end of the day, there is no physical gamer majority. Not to say people shouldn't ask for physical games to return, but that skewing the data to make physical look bigger than it is just won't work as an argument.
The real argument needs to be around ownership, resale, preservation, and consumer rights regardless of whether it's a physical game or digital game. You have significantly more rights for physical games than digital games at this point, and that's something that players and regulators should be pointing out and addressing.
Did more digging.
It gets worse.
I decided to compare, isolating the PS5 Platform as a comparison. How many more digital exclusive games are there? and does it correlate with the 85% number?
There are, at this point in time, about 1,120 PRINTED PS5 games (give or take). We are going to assume, that all 1,120 of those games also have a digital counterpart.
I went to the PSN store and simply clicked PS5 Platform and games. So this does not include DLC, MTX, etc. The total? 7,590 games.
But what about free to play?
Lets exclude those, this brings the total down to 7,451 games on the PSN store sorted specifically for the PS5. I want to note, this would be a COMPLETE PS5 library (thus far).
So, simple Math
7,451 - 1,120 = 6,331.
There are 6,331 MORE games on the PSN store than what's PHYSICALLY PRINTED For the PS5. That is 5.65x MORE games. These are all games that sell for 1 dollar, all the way up to your 100$+ digital special editions. If you Buy Final Fantasy Rebirth for 69.99 physically, go home, and buy "Quack McStuffins" for a dollar on PSN, those quantity of numbers are treated as equal.
and it gets even funnier.
Lets take that digital catalogue of 6,331 games and divide it by that complete library number (7,451) and turn it into a percentage.
6,331 divided by 7,451 = 84.96%
Meaning? almost 85% of the PS5's available library is DIGITAL ONLY. Ironic how 85% of Playstation's sales are digital eh?
So, what's happening here?
"All digital" defenders are using False Equivalency, and an Availability bias to gaslight users into thinking that no one plays physical anymore and to "get with the times" in the digital era.
Playstation themselves stated "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs." But this logic is ONLY sound if you apply a False Equivalency.
ALL OF THIS- Before we even take into account of the insomniac leaks back in 2022, which showed that 31 out of the 33 first party games sold MORE in Physical than Digital. And in recent memory, Astrobot selling around 55% physical vs Digital.
So, why are they doing this?
Because MONEY!
Playstation makes WAY more money if you buy the game digitally vs Physically. So playstation is using the backing of convenience, Digital Incentives, indie/AA teams, Mini-Games, and yes, AI Slop, to validate jamming gamers who prefer Physical games with a hot poker into a 100% digital era.

Can't help but feel history is repeating itself here with new leadership trying to cater to a small online community to make them feel good at the detriment of the actual business.
What's going to happen is they will revert, see it makes no difference to console sales, then revert back to their OG strategy a year or two after Helix' launch because they want to be a multiplatform publisher and they don't care where their games sell.

Valve had no choice but to increase these prices, if they actually want to even break even.
They don't have the leverage or volume to buy memory at cheaper prices. Ppl want them to sell at a loss? That's not sustainable.
The people you need to hate for the destruction of consumer tech are the AI hyperscalers: Google, Amazon, Oracle, Microsoft, etc. all of whom have fallen to AI psychosis.

PlayStation putting an end to their single-player games on PC has nothing to do with what Mike, or most others, are talking about.
The novelty of PlayStation on PC ended a while ago. Recent PC ports haven’t sold well enough to justify continuing the work.
That’s all.

I wish this wasn’t the case, but in many ways it makes sense if true.
They see the last nail in the coffin with Xbox and the churn there (hope it turns around).
Most important: they view Valve as a major new competitor. Valve will enter the living room and console market with Steam Machine and likely 3rd party variants of it all running on SteamOS. Valve doesn’t make many mistakes and Sony is smart to realize that.
Shipping good exclusive games matters. It’s not rocket science.
