We can’t believe it’s already #NNAs season again! Congratulations to all the nominated journalists and good luck tonight. We know how hard you've worked to get to this point: one of Canada's most prestigious journalism awards. But on the NNAs and diversity…

Unifor condemns the chilling actions of the anonymous figures who targeted and harassed Carrie Tait, a @globeandmail journalist who has been investigating political interference at the Alberta Health Agency. unifor.org/news/all-news/uni… #canlab

It’s unreal the amount of hate we are getting — for losing our jobs. What is wrong with people? How are we ever supposed to have good people - and ✨women✨- to speak truth to power when this is how we are treated?
Also remember that while we’re now transitioning out of employment we are still being flooded with hate.

Imagine losing your job, and seeing sick people gloating over it and making indirect death threats. Classy. Just look at the quote tweets of any of these journalists who announced their layoffs yesterday to see a display of the grotesque far-right hate underway in Canada.
Also remember that while we’re now transitioning out of employment we are still being flooded with hate.

#Canada: #CFWIJ is astonished at @globalnews decision to lay off at least four talented women journalists. Including award-winning @atRachelGilmore whose reporting for the outlet led to death threats. We stand in solidarity with those let go & demand an explanation from @CorusPR.

I am wondering how the fuck everyone in #cdnmedia can stand around watching a fellow journalist get ripped apart piece by piece and no one says a damn thing. The silence is defeaning and I see the plight of women in journalism doesn't mean shit to powerful well-known journalists
What a shameful moment for #cdnmedia as we all watch a digital assassination in slow motion. A journalist gets taken apart, piece by piece and not a word from the big names, the male colleagues, those we look up to & those who can afford to risk a lot more than us to show support.

Misogynistic, vile attacks don’t stop just because we’re laid off, quit or take a break. There is not enough protection and female journalists, especially those of colour, have it the worst. Solidarity with @atRachelGilmore

Many of my excellent journalist colleagues who lost their jobs at Global in the last week are being harassed and taunted by spineless, anonymous social media sludge. These journalists should and will find new and worthwhile employment and have futures. The bullies are just that.

Rachel Gilmore aka @atRachelGilmore has been savagely attacked especially. Others like @ReporterTeresa, @irelynelavery and @hiheidilee have also faced vitriol. Some have called for their deaths. It is horrible. But social media sites like Twitter permit this, unfortunately.

Hi friends! ✨ I’m heartbroken to share I have been laid off from Global News. I poured my heart and soul into the work I did alongside amazing colleagues, and I dealt with some horrifying backlash for it. But I wouldn't change a thing.

I can’t believe I have to say this! I keep getting notified that creepy people are using my email to make dating profiles. If you see me on a dating site, or an escort service, know that I am happily in a relationship and you are talking to a total creep. What a fucking week.

The far-right’s creepy, vile obsession with Rachel Gilmore is mostly evidence that her reporting on the far-right is good and valuable, and that the people pushing back are creepy and vile
Another one? At what point do I start charging?

Let's just be clear: Online harassment is the newest form of censorship. End of discussion.
This organized effort to bully, intimidate and silence journalists should be alarming to everyone. It won’t end here and it won’t end well.

And you too — columnists and other commentators — can sympathize with Iranian women without being hateful to your Muslim neighbours, colleagues and women you may pass by on the street. If you can’t, it’s a you problem, and not their problem.

I usually don’t speak out against my colleagues but it truly boggles my mind that 20 years after I entered the Cdn media industry, the obsession with how Muslim women dress continues. And 20 years later, the islamophobic tropes also continue. Sad to see how little has changed.

This. Must. Stop. Rachel and many others are doing superb work and this should not happen to her.
Last night, someone who clearly owns guns directly threatened and harassed my entire family. I'm speaking to police about this, but it's already forcing my loved ones to take precautions. You can disagree with my reporting. You can critique it. But don't threaten my family.

As the VP of the CAJ, I'm tired of politicians (and their teams) tweeting their disdain for online hate. Take a firm stance. Do something. Stop enabling the crowd that just won't stop harassing and threatening journalists. Show them why journalists are important to our society.
While we appreciate the words of support, journalists continue to receive threatening online messages. We need all political leaders, particularly those currently in government, to come together and take online hate seriously through legislation and enforcement. Actions > words
