The origin of Memorial Day trace back to 1865 when freed slaves started a tradition to honor fallen Union soldiers and to celebrate emancipation and commemorate those who died for that cause.

Nile Kinnick, Iowa Hawkeyes, 1939 Heisman Trophy. June 2, 1943, his Navy fighter plane was leaking oil. He choose not to land his plane to spare the crew on the Lexington from danger. His plane crashed into the Gulf of Paria, his body never recovered.
