KEWOPA held a strategic engagement with Iriip Gaa Ladies Group, a collective of professional women, mothers, and grassroots advocates. Founded on the core pillars of Resilience, Empowerment, Mentorship & Growth, and Equity & Inclusion, Iriip Gaa is dedicated to giving back, supporting one another, and equipping young girls to rise above systemic barriers and claim their rightful place as leaders.
Reaching across 11 counties, this non-partisan movement brings community-led advocacy to high-priority areas where challenges like gender-based violence, FGM, and early forced marriages affect young girls the most. Together, we are gearing up for an impactful regional mentorship event on November 27th - 28th in Eldoret.
We are bringing young girls directly together with women Parliamentarians for hands-on mentorship, career guidance, rights education, and civic awareness, reminding women everywhere that their voice and vote truly matter, completely independent of political party lines.

KEWOPA joined the @KenyaGovernors -Kenya Consultative Forum on Women's Political Leadership under the G7 Strategy, confronting the harsh reality that incremental progress is no longer enough after the 2022 elections saw women securing just 10% of single-constituency seats and 14.9% of governorships. To break these systemic barriers, KEWOPA is building a sustainable leadership pipeline across all governance levels.

To achieve true constitutional compliance, KEWOPA is rallying women candidates to step forward in 2027, demanding early stakeholder support long before party primaries, direct inclusion in high-level coalition negotiations, and decisive action against political violence and prohibitive campaign costs. Stakeholders are also invited to join the upcoming Gala Awards to honor outstanding women champions in public service. Together with partners like the Council of Governors, Kenyaโs women leaders are moving beyond rhetoric to organize deliberately, deliberate boldly, and engineer a transformative future for governance. #womeninpoliticske #genderequality
Building on this momentum, high-level women leaders led by Kirinyaga Governor Hon. Anne Waiguru alongside UN Women Kenya and the G7 Women Governors Caucus adopted resolutions to unite Kenyaโs female leadership. They committed to radical solidarity, building strategic coalitions to pass the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bills to implement the 2/3 gender rule before 2027, and ensuring women occupy top-level decision-making spaces. The resolutions call on women nationwide to vie for all elective positions, launch a joint mentorship campaign across G7, County Assemblies Forum, KEWOPA, and KEWOSA, and demand that the Registrar of Political Parties and key electoral actors strictly enforce gender-compliant party lists, safe party nomination processes, and protection from political violence.

Our Chairperson, Hon. Sopiato Leah Sankaire (Mama County 034 - Kajiado), represented the Parliament of Kenya (KEWOPA) at the World Women Parliamentarians Forum held from 11th to 13th October 2025 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The Forum is held under the theme "From Representation to Influence in the Decision-Making Process" and seeks to implement the 1995 Beijing Declaration and the 2025 IPU Plan of Action for Gender Parity in Parliaments.
#womeninpoliticske #fromrepresentationtoinfluence
Key Focus Areas of the Forum included gender quotas and electoral systems, legal and institutional reforms to sustain women's participation, leadership development, and sharing international best practices. Hon. Sankaire moderated the Plenary Session on Legal Environment; Changes and Reforms for Gender Equality and in her adress she noted: Kenya's Journey: Under Constitution 2010 Articles 27, 81, 97 & 177, Kenya now has 82 women in National Assembly, 21 in Senate and 7 Women Governors up from 3 in 2017. County Assemblies are fully compliant. The Gap: Kenya is at 23.5% against the 33.3% constitutional threshold, a deficit of 35 women in the National Assembly. The Solution: Support for the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025 and Cheruiyot Bill for a post-election top-up mechanism to realize the two-thirds gender principle and zipper system enforcement. Expected Outcome for Kenya: Strengthened mechanisms for women's representation, evidence-based policy reforms and enhanced citizen engagement to move from representation to substantive influence. The meeting brought together high-level international representatives, parliaments, government institutions, civil society and youth leaders. #womeninpoliticske #fromrepresentationtoinfluence
As Co-Chairs of the Women in Leadership (WIL) Thematic Group under the National Gender Sector Working Group (NGSWG), KEWOPA joined the Donor Partners Gender Group (DPGG) for its inaugural meeting under new leadership. Led by @CanadainKenya as Chair, alongside @IrelandinKenya and @SwedeninKE as Co-Chairs, the engagement fostered crucial dialogue with the State Department for Gender to accelerate gender equality and womenโs leadership across Kenya.

Representing KEWOPA, Executive Director Mercy Mwangi outlined key transformative pillars to strategically position women for impactful, decision-making roles ahead of the #2027Elections. Achieving equitable, meaningful representation requires locking in solid strategic frameworks that break systemic barriers and elevate female political participation.
#WomeninPoliticsKE #DPGG #WomeninPoliticske
Realizing true parity demands a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy: robust legal frameworks, protective security measures, and tailored technical support for women leaders. We appreciate our development partners for their continued synergy and commitment to advancing inclusive governance.
