Today’s video commentary. Political attack ads are incredibly easy to make, as I learned with a couple hours on my hands yesterday.
Leave it to @KIROCharlie to use AI to make fake attack ads against the SMN team. Is @newsguysully building the backups? Is @mandafactor hiding dogs? Did @LukeKIRO really have surgery — or was it Tahiti? Paid for by the "Harley Charger Foundation."😂😂

Today’s commentary. Some details you might not know about the Bite of Seattle shooting. This is the second time I have covered a mass gang shooting where it’s pretty clear anyone responsible will be able to claim self-defense. The law needs be changed.
Three months after the Bite of Seattle shooting killed Carlos Villalba, 44, and Ashley Whitehead, 56, and wounded a two-year-old boy, a juvenile court judge sent the 15-year-old arrested that night home on electronic monitoring. The judge said there's a "colorable claim of self-defense." @KIROCharlie weighs in on today's commentary.

Although is certainly not unprecedented, it’s pretty cool to me that I am out in my backyard in shorts and a T-shirt. The sun is shining. Patio furniture still has cushions on it. And it’s October 20 in Western Washington.

Today’s video commentary. A majority of the justices said a ruling didn’t define what “exploitive” means when banning materials for a convicted child molester.
A convicted child molester challenged a sentencing rule banning "sexually exploitive materials." His lawyers said it was too vague. Six Washington Supreme Court justices agreed and struck it down. @KIROCharlie says ask any parent what "sexually exploitive" means. You'll get an answer in four seconds.

Today’s video commentary. It’s been a rough 24 hours in the news. I took a few minutes this morning to tell you about some of the good things happening here, and the good people making a difference for women and children getting their lives back.
Last December, @KIROCharlie reported on a boy living in a tent off Aurora with his mom. He didn't know who was listening. A police officer was. Months later, his mom is deep into recovery; the boy turned 10, walked into a classroom for the first time in his life, and last month rode a bus for the first time.

Today’s commentary. I offer a couple of ideas that could help housing get built faster. I know talking about permits can be boring, but if we speed up the process, maybe we can also lower the cost of building.
Phoenix permits a home in about six weeks. Seattle takes about eight months. Economists say permitting delays explain up to 43% of the gap between the fastest- and slowest-building cities in the country. Texas auto-approves permits the city doesn't act on in time. @KIROCharlie on why Washington needs a real housing permit shot clock with actual teeth.

I continue to interview SCOW candidates. One of the questions I am asking all is if they can define "property." Also, is my paycheck my property?
Judge Ian Birk is running for the Washington State Supreme Court and is the first candidate in SMN's (@KIROCharlie) interview series to decline to define "property," saying a judge shouldn't preview positions on issues that could come before the court, even when the audience wants an answer.

I got the last Jimothy dog toy at the Southcenter Costco today. Juno, our Great Dane has been intensely interested since the moment I brought Jimothy in. I have bad news, Jimothy. Juno will love you and treat you well. Our wiener dog Ralph is going to destroy you.

Today’s video commentary. I was truly happy to help facilitate a conversation between the two opposing sides on the homelessness and addiction situation here. Nobody changed their minds. But if everyone on the panel started the night at 100% certain, a few left at 98 or 99. In this city, on this subject, that’s an earthquake.
Friday night, @KIROCharlie moderated a panel on homelessness and addiction put on by We Heart Seattle. Before the discussion started, he asked the room how many had a family member who'd lived through addiction or homelessness. Nearly every hand went up.

At least someone on this platform tells the truth.
Today is a day where we need to focus on facts, not emotions. And the facts are that, 600 years ago, at this very hour, a British explorer named Christopher Columbus disembarked from the Mayflower and discovered the United States of America after having set sale from London

A rising tide lifts all boats. I’m just concerned about how some guys aren’t feeling that right now.
A new survey says 60% of Washington men feel lonely on a regular basis. One in five say they have nobody to turn to, and a quarter haven’t had a real conversation about how they’re feeling in more than six months. Charlie looks into why so many guys are pulling back, how the phone makes it easy to feel connected without risking anything, and what to tell our sons about being a man. If you’re one of the lonely guys, or you’re worried about one, the advice is simple. Reach out. Listen to this and more on Seattle’s Morning News....

Today’s video commentary. The vast, vast majority of people with mental illness, even with severe issues, are peaceful and not a danger to anyone. And yet, there is a subset we should be concerned about. And what we’re doing right now isn’t healthy for public safety.
A UW student stabbed to death. A woman who needed a skin graft. A 75-year-old who lost sight in one eye. Two men killed with an ax. In every case, the system stepped in after the attack. @KIROCharlie weighs in on Seattle's mental health crisis and why nobody in office ever pays a price on this issue.
