I get that some people want to only/prefer to share the positive stories about #PatientEngagement - I think that’s a mistake. This work is messy and sharing the good only doesn’t help anyone. It also discounts people who haven’t had great experiences but who're still holding hope

Replying to @TO_dpr
Unless we share the not-so-good experiences things won't move forward, evolve and improve... Totally agree with you!

A couple of resources to help you out:
➡️ on the budget side (scroll down to #PatientEngagement, Budgeting Tool) - umanitoba.ca/centre-for-heal…
➡️ on the course side - this was fully conceived by and created by patient partners - cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/27297.html…
Pls share others you use! /end

Also, please think about and practice #PatientEngagement like any other research method that's part of your work: learn about it and hone your skills. Learning a new method takes time - there are resources to help you out... /2

To all the research teams engaging #PatientPartners: pls budget for #PatientEngagement. There's already a power imbalance when patients are invited to a team - not supporting them with a budget makes that worse (whether or not they want compensation for their work) /1

We need to break this assumption and foster a more inclusive understanding with workshops like this one.” Trudy Flynn.

Researchers & partners should address each of these expectations when:
✔️ Applying for PCORI funding
✔️ Developing a project plan and engagement plan for awarded projects
