Playing Otello transformed his career and changed his perception of musical interpretation, says @PlacidoDomingo , who next year will be celebrating his 60th anniversary in Hamburg, the German city where he first sang the immense Verdi role in 1975. "I was more of a lyric tenor back then but I had this dark, warm, and at the same time powerful timbre in my voice, which I liked very much. This led me to think I could tackle this really unique role," he told the magazine "Kloenschnack". Hamburg was decisive for Domingo because this was where he launched his European career in 1967 as Cavaradossi in "Tosca". "I was very young, full of enthusiasm and stepping onto a really important European stage," he said in an interview. Decades later, with some 151 operatic roles and every musical award under his belt, Domingo still considers the stage his home. "My life is the stage. Singing doesn't tire me at all, on the contrary it fills me with enthusiasm because making music with my colleagues is priceless."
