Since I started releasing my music on streaming platforms, I have generated approximately 52M streams as an indie artist. It took me 8 years to achieve this. Those streams amount to around $182K, give or take, if we consider $3500 per million streams as the calculation. However, this amount was divided among various parties such as producers, writers, musicians, and music creation costs. Consequently, I probably only received $20K-30K of it, if I was lucky, and that went towards personal expenses. Now, since I started launching Music NFTs, our community has circulated nearly 530 ETH across 8 projects/collections, combining primary and secondary earnings. We accomplished this in just one year. Based on the current ETH price of $1813, this converts to approximately $961K. While the exact amount may vary due to volatility in the past 15 months, it serves to emphasize how streaming services have devalued music over time and harmed contemporary songwriters. Making a living solely from streaming as a songwriter has become virtually impossible, even if you own the master rights. However, the blockchain is addressing this issue. With day 1, wallet-to-wallet payouts, there are no intermediaries, flawed algorithms, or curation. The value of art is now determined by the community. This is why I am constantly optimistic about web3 music. The power is now in our hands.
