Got laid off from my job as a tech reporter on Monday; published an article about ancient penis sculptures on Friday. Yeah, maybe I don't have a 401k anymore, but YOU CAN'T KILL ME. I'M A JOURNALISM COCKROACH.

Dave is an amazing reporter, hire the man!
Got laid off from @dotLA today along with the entirety of the newsroom. Sad to see another local journalism outlet fail. Super bummed for my colleagues. However this means I'm going back to freelancing and doing whatever I want whenever I want. Gonna go surf right now. More soon.

Great thread. I'd add that a key throughline from crunchy > white nationalism is purity — an obsession with it. It isn't that big of a leap, it turns out, from an interest in purity of the body, mind, soul, etc to becoming committed to purity of nation, community, and race.

I'm increasingly concerned about this after watching "wellness" trends bloom in spaces like TikTok, and it seems like the poor quality of care/lack of respect women receive regarding their health makes them especially vulnerable to the misinformation pipeline.

I begin with love, hoping to end there.
—Jericho Brown

ALT JERICHO BROWN DUPLEX (I BEGIN WITH LOVE) I begin with love, hoping to end there. I don’t want to leave a messy corpse. I don’t want to leave a messy corpse Full of medicines that turn in the sun. Some of my medicines turn in the sun. Some of us don’t need hell to be good. Those who need least, need hell to be good. What are the symptoms of your sickness? Here is one symptom of my sickness: Men who love me are men who miss me. Men who leave me are men who miss me In the dream where I am an island. In the dream where I am an island, I grow green with hope. I’d like to end there.

Anyway, while we're talking about Elizabeth Holmes, its worth re-iterating a critical point made by @nataliesurely yet few (if anybody) else: it's not just that her product didn't work, it's that the very concept was a BAD ONE even if it DID work.

🚨This summer, Sheila Heti began talking to a chatbot named Eliza about God, art, and consciousness, before things took some strange turns. This week, we're publishing a new work that came out of these conversations in five parts (they are amazing)
