I have some exciting news to share! I am proudly endorsing Hugo Soto-Martinez for City Council, District 13, and have joined the campaign as a Senior Policy Advisor.

Delighted to announce we're endorsed by @Kate_Pynoos, who is now our Senior Policy Advisor! Kate’s City Hall experience — from working on the Eviction Ban my opponent voted down, to helping house 100+ people in Venice in just a few months — is a major resource for our campaign!

Last week, I joined my colleagues in supporting a motion offered by @HugoForCD13 that would have lifted the upcoming January 31, 2023 end-date for the City’s Emergency Declaration for Covid, and along with it significant tenant protections. Despite our efforts, the motion failed:

Check in on your loved ones. We all need care and support. And, if you ever need someone to talk to call 988 — It’s a helpline rooted in care that isn’t run by law enforcement.

I have loved going to #CoffeeCoffee at 5630 Melrose, and am dismayed to hear that their workers have not been paid and are having to picket. Please act in solidarity with their workers and do not support either location until workers are paid and get just recompense.

If you’re a renter and worried about the future of LA’s emergency tenant protections, your or your family’s housing situation, or when you have to pay back rent, read this incredibly detailed thread!

Yesterday I stood with the @KeepLAHoused Coalition, some Council colleagues, and renters from across LA to call for permanent tenant protections before the COVID emergency ends. Here’s what tenants can expect in the coming months — and what we still have to fight for. (thread)

We have @cd4losangeles speaking and such powerful words were said! “Are we going to kick people out of their houses because they owe Pennies? No!” Thank you Nithya Raman for helping fight to #KeepLAHoused

As our first day on City Council comes to a close, I'm reflecting on the movement that brought us here. It's not just about me getting sworn in — it's about the housekeepers, the young people, the immigrants, the renters, and everyone coming with us to City Hall. ¡Sí se pudo!

Today, we wrote our own path—not with wrath, but with will. For where there’s will, there’s women. And where there’s women, there is forever a way. Congratulations @KarenBassLA ! latimes.com/california/story…

As it stands, every COVID tenant safeguard will disappear on February 1st. Join us Tuesday morning to demand we enact permanent renter protections like universal Just Cause Eviction rights, a one month grace period, and more!

Vile racist Kevin de León just showed up for council. I walked out, as did @mhdcd8 and @nithyavraman. He needs to resign.

Over 1,000 New York Times workers are on strike today! Make sure not to cross the digital picket line: no website, no app, not even wordle! We stand in solidarity with all the workers fighting for dignity, respect, a fair contract and a truly equitable newsroom!

Patricia Castellanos’ career embodies the values we fight for. She’s a true organizer, rooted in LA institutions like SCOPE and LAANE. She’s crafted policy centered on economic justice for Supervisor Kuehl. She’s a leader. We couldn’t be happier to have her as our Chief of Staff.

LA's Fair Work Week ordinance gives 70k service workers two weeks advance notice of their schedules, minimum 10 hours rest between shifts, and much more. Thousands came together to win back their time, and now it's no longer at the mercy of their bosses. This is a huge victory.

With today’s passage of LA’s Fair Work Week ordinance, retail and grocery workers – many of whom are people of color and live paycheck to paycheck – are guaranteed greater protections. Let’s break it down. (1/4)

The City Council took a huge step today to help retail workers, approving a "Fair Work Week" ordinance that will help employees plan their budgets, care for their families, and juggle work and school. 🧵

Thank you to everyone who made this victory possible. There’s more to say and a long list of incredible people to thank— but for now, you can read our full statement here:
HUGO SOTO-MARTÍNEZ STATEMENT ON WINNING THE CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 13 ELECTION As we said at the beginning, what we win is equal to the power that we build – and together we’ve built an incredibly powerful multiracial movement of working people. Now, we’re bringing this movement into City Hall. During the last 15 months, our team of 2000+ volunteers: Knocked over 140,000 doors Made over 50,000 phone calls Texted over 150,000 voters Sent out over 15,000 handwritten postcards. We want to thank Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell for a spirited campaign. I respect your passion for constituent services, and how hard you fought to see your vision through. I look forward to working with you to ensure the smoothest possible transition for the residents of CD13. ¡Sí se pudo! Hugo

WE DID IT! We ran this campaign to build community power for workers, immigrants, the unhoused, people of color, young people, renters, and all of us who have been neglected by our city officials. Now, we’re bringing this movement into City Hall. ¡Sí se pudo!
