Solemnity of All Saints, who are with Christ in glory: in a single joyful celebration, Holy Church, while yet a pilgrim on earth, venerates the memory of those in whose company heaven exults, that she may be stirred by their example, rejoice in their intercession and triumph, and be crowned in the sight of the Divine Majesty for ages unending. All you holy men and women, pray for us!

I was truly saddened to learn of the death of the great Patrick Stewart. Though he’s best known for playing Captain Picard on Star Trek, I really savored him as an interpreter of Shakespeare. One of my favorite of his performances was as Enobarbus in a production of Antony and Cleopatra. But I also loved him as Macbeth in a modern adaptation of the Scottish Play and as King Claudius in Hamlet. One of the very few bright spots during the awful Covid period was Stewart’s daily presentation of a Shakespeare sonnet from his back garden in Los Angeles. Dare I admit too that I loved his many appearances on Family Guy and as the narrator of the Ted movies? God rest you, Patrick Stewart, and “may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

In 1991, Patrick Stewart surprised STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry with a song and dance routine on the USS Enterprise-D bridge. The footage was never meant for public viewing, but eventually surfaced as a Season 5 DVD bonus feature.

So sorry to hear that Walter Koenig has passed away. I knew Walter to be a very sincere, friendly, and no-nonsense man. He took his craft seriously and I very much respected him for that. He had the gift of listening to you and responding with sensitivity and wisdom. RIP Walter.
