Grateful for a reminder to be kind as much as possible. So easy to develop some rough edges in the world the way it is & I'm guilty of it; need to keep the heart soft and attentive to people.

My father has never hugged me.
Not when I was born. Not at my graduation. Not when I left home.
That's normal for a Japanese father his age. Love is a full gas tank when you visit. A bag of oranges handed over without a word.
Last month, my friend from Texas came to dinner at my parents' house. When it was time to go, he did what Texans do.
He hugged my mother.
Then he turned around and hugged my father.
My father froze. Arms straight down. Like a soldier being hugged by a bear.
Three seconds. Nobody breathed.
After he left, my father sat at the table for a long time. Then he said:
"In America… do they do that with their fathers too?"
"Every time," I said.
He nodded. That was all.
Two weeks later, I went home for dinner. When I was leaving, my father stood up, walked to the door, and put his arms around me.
Badly. Like he was assembling furniture with no instructions.
I'm over forty. It was the first time.
He let go, looked at the floor, and said, "Drive safely."
My mother told me later he'd been practicing on the dog.
If you look at what the world tends to reward, on balance, it will discourage you. Look instead for fruitfulness.

A regimen of listening to Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas could be an antidote to the decline in attention spans. They were his workshop for musical ideas - and they got more complex over time. As you work through them, they keep requiring a little more of you. And listening to this kind of music blocks everything else out - and is really enjoyable. Maybe it would spill out and generate the ability to concentrate more broadly.
Here is just the exposition from Beethoven’s first sonata with Richter - one minute of your time. You get the two themes that make up the movement, which in total is about 5 minutes. The rest of the movement develops and repeats what you hear in this. The entire sonata is only 20 minutes long - with a lot of variety in key and tempo.

“A South Korean team reported Thursday that after years of forensic astronomy and research into the Dutch artist, they have matched his masterpiece to a predawn sky over France’s Saint-Remy de Provence right around July 22, 1889.”

We can fight back.
One day at a time, in 15-minute increments, read something real.
Push back against the marauding hordes of time bandits and reclaim your attention.
Please, never despair.
The sister of Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte gives a heartbreaking tribute to her older brother, says he acted like a father to her.
"RJ Mitte was my older brother, but I not only just lost a brother, I lost my father."
"My mom was a single mother, and when I was 2 weeks old, she was in an accident that paralyzed her from the waist down for the first few years of my life. And my brother immediately took on the father role."
"I don't have many words that I can put together. But all I can say is that every part of me is RJ."
Incredibly sad. Pray for her.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do If the stars only came out once every thousand years.
No one would sleep that night, of course.
The world would become religious overnight.
We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God.
Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.
~Paul Hawken
