One of the easiest ways to dismiss an uncomfortable moral truth is to point to the failings of the person expressing it. Christians are sinners, sometimes spectacularly so, and hypocrisy can seriously undermine the credibility of their witness. But it does not make what they say untrue. The Christian claim is not that we are morally superior to others, but that there exists an objective moral law which stands above all of us, including those who profess to follow it. We do not get to redefine right and wrong simply because we find obedience difficult. Christianity demands two things of us: that we bear witness to the truth, and that we strive to live according to it. When we fail at the second, the answer is repentance, not abandoning the first. The failure to live up to the truth does not make the truth any less true.

Pope Leo XIV in Uruguay: “The unborn already belong to the human family, and to the future of their people. Their absolute dependence on their mother does not diminish the dignity to which they are entitled, nor to the protection they deserve. Jesus Himself chose to assume this condition. Welcoming a new life requires that fathers assume their responsibilities alongside mothers, that the family offers their support and that social conditions exist that allow both parents to raise and care for their children. Protection of the unborn and the support of those who welcome them are inseparable. The family remains the primary setting in which each person is welcomed and learns to life with others. St. John Paul II, who also had the joy to visit this land, expressed this in a phrase that retains all of its original force; “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.””

Virginia voters just put abortion in their state constitution. Even in the third trimester, a baby cannot be protected when a physician cites mental health. That is late term abortion through a loophole, and I will not stop fighting until every child in Virginia is protected.

From a catechetical instruction on the Creed by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, bishop On the creed In learning and professing the faith, you must accept and retain only the Church’s present tradition, confirmed as it is by the Scriptures. Although not everyone is able to read the Scriptures, some because they have never learned to read, others because their daily activities keep them from such study, still so that their souls will not be lost through ignorance, we have gathered together the whole of the faith in a few concise articles. Now I order you to retain this creed for you nourishment through life and never to accept any alternative, not even if I myself were to change and say something contrary to what I am now teaching, not even if some angel of contradiction, changed into an angel of light, tried to lead you astray. For even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which you have now received, let him be accursed in your sight. So for the present be content to listen to the simple words of the creed and to memorize them; at some suitable time you can find the proof of each article in the Scriptures. This summary of the faith was not composed at man’s whim; the most important sections were chosen from the whole Scripture to constitute and complete a comprehensive statement of the faith. Just as the mustard seed contains in a small grain many branches, so this brief statement of the faith keeps in its heart, as it were, all the religious truth to be found in Old and New Testament alike. That is why, my brothers, you must consider and preserve the traditions you are now receiving. Inscribe them across your heart. Observe them scrupulously, so that no enemy may rob any of you in an idle and heedless moment; let no heretic deprive you of what has been given to you. Faith is rather like depositing in a bank the money entrusted to you, and God will surely demand an account of what you have deposited. In the words of the Apostle: I charge you before the God who gives life to all things, and before Christ who bore witness under Pontius Pilate in a splendid declaration, to keep unblemished this faith you have received, until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. You have now been given life’s great treasure; when he comes, the Lord will ask for what he has entrusted to you. At the appointed time he will reveal himself, for he is the blessed and sole Ruler, King of kings, Lord of lords. He alone is immortal, dwelling in unapproachable light. No man has seen or ever can see him. To him be glory, honor and power for ever and ever. Amen. RESPONSORY Hebreews 10:38-39; Habakkuk 2:4 The just man will live by faith; but if he draws back, I will take no pleasure in him. — We are not people who draw back and are lost; we live by faith, that we might be saved. The unbeliever has no integrity. — We are not people who draw back and are lost; we live by faith, that we might be saved.

I hope I dont offend folks I respect and admire for their courageous defense of children in the womb and the TRUE teaching of the Church. But I am growing tired of the social media shooting match. We have been back in Virginia for almost two years. The Catholic Bishops of Virginia stood FIRM FOR LIFE AND URGED THE FAITHFUL TO DO THE SAME. They were GREAT. Yet, the evil "Amendment one" passed and children in the womb will soon be killed! Catastrophically through "legal" abortion. What if the social media lay "Catholic experts" who LOVE opposing Bishops and forming circular firing squads, setting Catholics and other Christians against each other, spent their energy standing up in the public square for the babies in the womb and being the Christians they accuse the Bishops of not being... Maybe it would be a better use of their time and of the social media.

On Election Day, a majority of Virginians tragically voted to insert an extreme and limitless legal right to abortion into our Commonwealth's constitution and eliminating the state's recognition of marriage as a sacred institution uniting one man and one woman. As people of faith, resolved to live by God's divine and natural law, we recognize that fundamental truths, such as the human right to life and the sacredness of marriage, can never legitimately be put to a vote. Despite this tragic outcome, we resolve to continue speaking the truth with love. We persevere in faith and hope, and do not despair. Across America, as here in Virginia, advocacy and courage are now needed more than ever. The conversion of nations, states, and peoples is only ever possible by the grace of God, to whom we turn with confidence and hope, now and always.

Thank you Virginia Catholic Bishops. You spoke out clearly, courageously and continually before this election. Not "too little too late". You strongly directed the faithful under your care in Virginia to vote NO on Amendment One which attempted to " Make constitutional" under the Virginia Constitution to kill innocent babies in the womb up to birth. And NO on Amendment Two which essentially attempts to redefine Marriage, which is solely possible between One Man and One Woman, through some new form of verbal alchemy. Thank you. KEEP LEADING! Don't be intimidated by anyone trying the old "keep religion out of politics" verbal assault to prevent you from speaking TRUTH. WHEN EVERY MORAL ISSUE IS CALLED "POLITICAL" in an attempt to keep truth from the public square, true freedom is under assault. You are doing what you are ordained to do. I am honored to be a Catholic Deacon and Moral theologian in Virginia. And, as an old, battle tested Constitutional Lawyer in Virginia I stand ready to help you if you face opposition in the civil arena. Deacon Keith Fournier

pasted in and a link: Statement by Bishop Burbidge and Bishop Knestout on Ballot Question Outcomes November 4, 2026 The Virginia Catholic Conference released this statement on behalf of Bishop Barry C. Knestout and Bishop Michael F. Burbidge on the results of the midterm elections: The approval by Virginia voters of Ballot Question 1 is profoundly tragic. Unless a court intervenes, this decision will embed virtually limitless abortion into the constitution. It will put women’s health and safety at severe risk and leave parents out of life-altering and irreversible decisions involving their minor daughters. Most fundamentally, this extreme, radical, dangerous and deadly constitutional amendment is a complete rejection of the immeasurable value of human life, created in God’s image and likeness. Virginia voters’ approval of Ballot Question 2 also denies the truth that marriage – created by God – is the union of a man and a woman. Unless a court intervenes, Virginia’s constitution will recognize “any lawful marriage between two adult persons” – contrary to God’s design. Though profoundly disappointed by these two results, we are also deeply grateful to so many people within our parishes and throughout our Commonwealth who worked tirelessly to try to prevent these extremely harmful and misguided outcomes. Their steadfast efforts were firmly grounded in truth and justice. We express our heartfelt appreciation to all who gave sacrificially of their time, energy and expertise to defend the sanctity of life and marriage. Though this collective effort did not prevail, the commitment and perseverance poured into it glorify God nevertheless. To everyone who engaged in this effort, we urge you to persevere in faith and hope – anchored in the sure knowledge that God is the Author of life and marriage. No vote can alter the sacredness of human life. Nor can any vote change the reality that marriage is and can only ever be the union of one man and one woman. Finally, we do welcome the decision by Virginia voters to approve Ballot Question 3. This result will provide a second chance for people who have completed their time of incarceration to participate in the political process. The Catechism reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate … in promoting the common good. … As far as possible, citizens should take an active part in public life” (nos. 1913-1915). Participation must continue. Love of God and neighbor require each of us to be faithful citizens all year every year – whether the outcomes we work toward are realized in our particular time and place or not. Together, let us continue to provide compassionate care and support for children before and after birth, and for their mothers and families. Let us continue to work for policies that help pregnant women facing challenging circumstances choose life. And let us continue to pray that – with the help of Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church – we may persevere and never despair in continuing the vital work of building a culture in which, one day, every life will be welcomed in love and protected in law.

Friends, the two extremes we so often find in the conversation about church and state—theocracy and aggressive secularism—are both predicated upon a faulty understanding of God as the supreme being among beings. In the world of beings, there’s a competitiveness and a mutual exclusivity. When one thing enters the space of another, the other must give way. It’s a zero-sum game. If we understand God in this way, we’re left with a dilemma: Either religion dominates the government, or the government is completely independent of and indifferent to religion. I say: A plague on both your houses! For God is not the supreme being but Being itself—the creative ground of all reality.

Friends, James Madison, who formulated the Bill of Rights, wrote, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Thus, in the United States, there would be no official state religion; at the same time, citizens would be free to practice their faith publicly. This was a stroke of genius in a pluralistic society, where there wasn’t a clear consensus about matters of church and faith. Did Madison solve the problem definitively? Clearly not. But the conversation he began many years ago is one worth continuing.
