The Chinese Communist Party regime likes us to think itโs a major superpower. But in reality, itโs a neurotic, paranoid, insecure dictatorship that throws tantrums when you tell the truth about them - that theyโre dictators.
Mbappe shouldnโt have apologised. He should have held his ground.
At least three Chinese firms have cut their ties with the French football star Kylian Mbappe, after he apparently described Chairman Mao as a Chinese dictator.
In a clip from a French online talk show - Mbappe is shown referring to a meme which imposed his face on Mao's body.
China's foreign affairs ministry said "words and actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people will naturally be met with opposition".

Man discovers that when you make it illegal to express an opinion, no one expresses that opinion.
Very funny dissonance between the ambient western media portrayal of Mao as a โdictatorโ and the undeniable fact that among more than 1 billion actual Chinese people that is an extremely fringe opinion

It is illegal to "mock" figures such as Mao in China, making it an unlikely position for the average Chinese citizen to hold.

So much for "only pay for what you use then".
I have a lot of respect for @MartinSLewis, Indeed I think his financial shows should be compulsory viewing as the advice is excellent.
However, on this I believe he has campaigned for a populist totem rather than an economically sensible one.
Larger users, including those who are disabled, elderly, sick and work from home will now be subsidising others who are lower users.
The entire reason a fixed standing charge is applied is to cover fixed network charges. Including meter maintenance, which last time I looked, we all had just one.
Its also transparent.
Now it's hidden away with some of the most vulnerable and higher users picking up the unknown bill.
For all Martin has done to help people with finances I cant believe he campaigned for this, it is so counter intuitive.
CONFIRMED. Gas Standing Charges to be scrapped. I've just come out of a meeting with the Chancellor. The gas standing charge will be scrapped in 2027 (my guess, either for 1 Oct price cap or the 1 Jan 28 price cap). Having campaigned against the moral hazard of standing charges for years, I'm pleased.
It's currently ยฃ108 a year. That cost will be shifted onto unit rates. We don't know how much yet, but I suspect just under 1p per kwH.
The Chancellor also said he will be talking to Ofgem about how they get rid of the charge on electricity as well, but that is 'trickier' apparently and will take longer.
This is primarily about the price cap standing charges. There will still be an open market, so other firms can offer other forms of prices with or without the standing charge. My suspicion is that once it goes on the price cap, it will tend to be reduced on other tariffs as well.
As for those on fixes: if you get a fix now, the rate of your fix is fixed, so this should not affect it. You will pay what you pay and if it has standing charges they will continue (some asking if they should delay fixing because of this, no if a fix is right for you and will save you money, don't let this change that - this is about the structure of bills, as opposed to the actual costs on bills).
About 60% of people will pay less due to this, 40% more. My guesstimate is the dividing line will be somewhere around 12,500 kilowatt hours of gas (can't know until there is actual pricing). According to a study by Nesta, this switch would leave the majority of people in all income groups under ยฃ100,000 better off.
Of course, when this does come in, if we're still in the nightmare that we are right now, there will need to be support put in for vulnerable higher users, who will have to pay more. Though hopefully by then the mid-east will have calmed and energy prices lower.
---------------
That's all long term. The biggest issue in energy right now is that we're expecting a 27% rise in the price cap in January. I asked the Chancellor whether he will be intervening on that. He told me I'd have to wait for the budget, but reading between the lines, yes, there will be an announcement today.
Whether it's an increase in the Warm Home Discount, or whether it's council tax banned, or whether it's done via a payout for people in say council tax bands A-D as a proxy for household income as Rishi Sunak did who knows.

The thing about Mao Zedong was that he was not just a dictator. He was actually a f***ing idiot to such an extent that it would make Trumpโs ridiculous claims of himself being a โstable geniusโ almost credible.
Mao forced farmers to make steel out of farm tools and in small village furnaces, which left farmers with no tools to work the fields. He forced farmers to chase away insect-eating sparrows, which led yo locust-infested fields. Millions starved to death as a result.
He thought that turning the population on itself in endless struggle was the path to proletariat prosperity - all it had done was to make more starve to death, loss of Chinese know-how across the board and China left on the brink of bankruptcy.
His views on dental hygiene were so off the planet that he eschewed both โmodernโ or more traditional Chinese modes of dental care, to the point that his doctors and others all mention the rotting stench that emanated from his mouth.
Not all dictators are idiots - Deng Xiaoping was a dictator but not an idiot. But Mao excelled himself in his idiotmaxxing, more a buffoonish Idi Amin than a dangerously bright Emperor Kangxi.

Medieval people had relatively easy access to clean water and drank lots of it. Ale was a cheap and tasty way to consume grain and provide drinkers with nutrients, carbs and proteins. But they didn't just drink it as a replacement for dangerous water. They also weren't buzzed because the beer was very light.

Michael Pollan reveals how the introduction of caffeine completely changed human history and consciousness.
"Before caffeine, it was a very different world and a very different consciousness. People were drunk a lot of the time, buzzed almost all of the time because it was safer than water"
"Water was really how you got diseases. If you fermented things, even low alcohol, it killed a lot of the microbes. So people, even kids, drank hard cider for breakfast"
"Tea, chocolate, and coffee all arrive in the same decade in England, and things start to change... no one ate or drank boiling water or hot beverages before"
"Boiling it made it much safer. This gave this incredible public health boost to these places, and then you have the drug that fosters a kind of more linear, rational, focused way of thinking"
"People in the 1600s started writing about it saying, 'Wow, we have this new civil and sober drink that we can use.' And that, I think, makes possible things like the Industrial Revolution"

Interestingly, the annual budget top-up for UK AISI is **by itself** around half the **total** annual budget for the US' AI safety institute. (Assuming the top-up is evenly spread to 2030).
NEW from me: Britainโs AI testing agency outguns US
Britain wants to pour another ยฃ120 million โ roughly $160 million โ into a government lab that tests the worldโs most powerful AI models, an infusion of cash that alone is more than 10 times the annual budget of its US counterpart.
It contrasts sharply with the approach in the US, where federal efforts to evaluate AI are receiving far less cash and are shared by different parts of government.

Under โdictatorโ Mao, life expectancy in China increased by 30 years, literacy rates went from 20% to 70%, steel output grew from 1 million to 23 million tons, 47 million hectares of land was taken from landlords and given to peasants, and China was unified under a strong central state and got nuclear weapons.

Fancy a Cambridge professor who doesnโt know what heโs talking about.
Chinaโs path to global significance actually started when Deng Xiaoping DITCHED Maoist policy settings by gradually dismantling collectivisation, encouraging private enterprise, easing political repression (1989 aside), and adopting a more Western-friendly attitude (which culminated in China joining the WTO under Dengโs successors, and that in turn gave China Western market access which set it on the path to economic strength). And while not even Xi completely reverted to Maoism, his partial reversal of Dengโs pro-market, pro-Western settings coincided with Chinaโs current โJapan on steroidsโ unceasing economic doldrums.
For once, the community note is actually useful. Millions of people did indeed die under Mao's reign. It was a tragedy.
But, for some reason, the Western mind seems incapable of grasping the complex impact of Mao. In the West, we refuse to acknowledge that Mao is actually respected and admired in China.
I've listed a few reasons in my original post. Unity and sovereignty are big ones. After a century of being carved up and subjected to imperialism, Mao unified China into a single central state. He removed foreign influence. He stood up to the US.
Chinaโs status as a major power today rests on foundations built by Mao.
