Yes, national debt topped $40 trillion in August—but beware talk of “doom loops” and “death spirals.” Measured correctly, debt is down over the last decade. Down, not up! For example, outside 2020's lockdown-driven GDP dive, US household debt as a percentage of national output has steadily fallen since 2008's financial crisis. I’m not advocating for more debt, but big numbers without context can be misleading.
Worldwide government, corporate and household liabilities in aggregate have also fallen relative to the global economy. Following a spike to 285% in late 2020, global debt-to-GDP ratios unwound all pandemic-era increases to settle back around 246% by the end of last year. The takeaway? Don’t waste your time, emotions or money on headline debt doomerism.
