for pretty obvious reasons this is the thing that maximally hits my boomer resentment rage button. they lived in a world where you could take this journey and just fucked around coasting off the hospitality of poor people and looking for drugs.

Saladin’s hospital in Cairo (as described by Ibn Jubayr) did this—a courtyard graced with greenery and running water, with the structure’s architecture itself being sprawling and palatial. The Almohad Ya‘qub al-Mansur followed suit. The idea was that beauty itself healed.

I've compared 2022 coup against Imran Khan in Pakistan to 1997 Turkish coup against Necmettin Erbakan; the motives, methods, and outcomes are especially similar. This passage by Erik Zurcher on late 1990s Turkiye, minus the Kemalism, could've been writ abt 2020s Pakistan.

Today I learned that Syrian textbooks under Assad were more anti-Iran than the ones today.
Replying to @Osint613
The most telling edit: ninth grade geography.
The old book listed the "stolen regions": Palestine, plus land held by Turkey and Iran. The new edition deletes Turkey and Iran. Palestine stays, and a new line names Israel.
Then: "How can one be rid of these artificial borders?"

So in addition to the ~1dinar/month wage for day workers, I see some sources that a modest dwelling in Cairo could be as low as 20 dinars.
One unskilled labourer could also easily cover subsistence food cost for a family of four: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

120-210 dinars to purchase a rich (not normal!) house in a big city.
Low end day worker earns 1 dinar a month.
Seems like medieval labourers might have had a better shot at buying a luxury property in a big city than middle class zoomers have at buying a normal one!

They found a guy who thinks he's been abducted by aliens and is convinced they're Jinn because the Quran talks about Jinn.
They then asked if he believes in astrology
"Nah... that's clearly irrational bullshit"

It’s “don’t take your knowledge from non-Muslims” except when you’ve got to quote Coleman Barks to make Rumi look bad.

Both sneako and trads like this are retarded . The fact he thinks that Ibn T being imprisoned is something that denigrates him speaks of a rotten mentality
Sneako, comparing Rumi to Ibn Taymiyyah is comedy.
Ibn Taymiyyah spent a good chunk of his life locked up by the Mamluks for his views. He died in their prison. That’s the historical record. Rumi was a major figure in his own time, respected, with a following that turned into one of the great Sufi orders of the Ummah. There’s no Wahhabi or modern Salafi polemicist on Rumi’s level. Not in spiritual rank, not in influence on the traditional Sunni world, not in the hearts of Ahlus Sunnah. The language in Rumi’s poetry about love is the standard Sufi idiom for the soul’s longing for Allah. Reducing it to “homosexual poems” and “fantasizing about dudes” is a surface reading that people who actually studied the tradition don’t make. You’re siding with the wahabi people who want to shrink the Ummah down to their narrow box, and then acting surprised when traditional Sunnis push back.
