This century, teams were 0-640 when trailing by 8+ runs in an NCAA softball tourney game.
It's now 1-640. Texas Tech was down 8 runs WITH ONLY ONE OUT LEFT and somehow became the first 🤯

Aside from the “Dad Jeans” comment (I guess if the shoe fits??), this was a great piece! Thanks @DanMurphyESPN espn.com/college-football/st…

This team has been signing autographs for at least a half hour and this is still how long the line is.

"Avid College Sports fans" per Big 12 school (national rank):
Texas Tech 794K (28th)
BYU 781K (29th)
Kansas 764K (32nd)
Colorado 746K (34th)
Arizona State 734K (35th)
Arizona 734K (36th)
Iowa State 707K (38th)
Oklahoma State 686K (40th)
West Virginia 683K (41st)
UCF 633K (47th)
Utah 626K (48th)
Baylor 569K (52nd)
Kansas State 559K (53rd)
TCU 542K (55th)
Chcinnati 500K (58th)
Houston 402K (63rd)
I devised a formula to ascertain which programs the 26% of Americans aged 12+ who call themselves "Avid College Sports Fans" actually support (so, to be clear, this is all avid fans of a school, whether they be mainly football, basketball, or other sports fans)
The metrics I've included are:
-Attendance: for all sports but weighted heavily towards Football (and next towards Men's Basketball) as well as % capacity data for football, and basketball
-Social media total followers and interactions (again, including all sports, but heavily weighted to Football and Men's Basketball)
-Enrollment, faculty, and staff figures weighted by fan-passion (based on a large student survey on each campus by Niche)
-Alumni base data
For reference:
*Ohio State was #1 nationally with 2.10M
*Unless we're already counting SMU as a "power program" (they would be last by a long shot at 185K "avid fans,") Northwestern was the lowest current "P4" program at 226K. The rest of the bottom-ten were (from most fans to least): Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Houston, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Cal, Boston College, Washington State, and Wake Forest
*UConn has the most "avid fans" (@ 556K) outside of the current P5 based on the obvious strength of their Men's & Women's Basketball programs
*The next highest non-P5 fan bases were Boise St, App State, Fresno St, ECU, USF, SDSU, and Memphis
*UL-Monroe was dead last among all FBS schools at only 75K "avid fans"
After releasing the data for all other FBS conferences/teams, for my next tricks, I've been working on two related projects:
1) finalizing a formula to delve into who the additional 30% of the nation who consider themselves "Casual college sports fans" are affiliated with (involving the above metrics while adding some others, including TV viewership, and weighting of other fan base estimates/surveys)
2) assessing the "Brand Quality" and "Potential Upside" of each FBS program based on some of the metrics above as well as historical sports performance, local/state demographics&TV market weighted by college sports interest, and "Flagship" status
The results of these three formulas (as well as other metrics) factor into each team's "resume" in the world of conference realignment/consolidation, especially as it relates to media/financial value.
(Bonus: I've included the top 20 list of programs with the highest # of "Avid College Sports Fans" in the last screenshot)
