As I complete my ambassadorial assignment in China, I took a few minutes to look back on a journey that has been professionally rewarding and personally memorable.
Six minutes can only capture a fraction of the journey, but here are some moments, memories and reflections from my time in China.
May Pakistan-China friendship continue to flourish, drawing strength from mutual trust, shared purpose and the bonds between our peoples. 🇵🇰🇨🇳

Foreign Service of Pakistan Day 2026: Message from the Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad

Husham Ahmad, Counsellor at the Pakistan Mission in Geneva, delivered a right of reply to remarks of Indian representative during the UNGA First Committee of the UN General Assembly (UNGA-81)
Major points of his RoR below:
➡️ We have heard the familiar Indian repertoire once again: an aggressor posing as a victim, and a sponsor of terrorism lecturing others on terrorism.
➡️ On the issue of restraint, we have just pointed out what has India done in recent times. India has canisterized its missiles, raising their launch readiness. It has put nuclear weapons to sea. It is developing hypersonic systems. It is using dual-capable missiles in conflicts generating significant risks.
➡️ For decades, strategic stability between any two nuclear-armed states has relied on mutual risk awareness, restraint, and crisis communication.
➡️ India’s emerging military doctrines seek to dismantle this equilibrium, imagining a “new normal” where conventional strikes against a nuclear-armed neighbor can be treated as cost-free adventures.
➡️ Wars do not follow scripts. The belief that one can initiate hostilities on any pretext, control escalation, and dictate the terms of peace is delusional. May last year proved it.
➡️ On terrorism, India should look in the mirror. The truth is that India's invocation of the terrorism bogey conceals a darker design. It is a tool to advance its hegemonic ambitions and justify the use of military force as a coercive policy instrument.
➡️ Pakistan has lost nearly 100,000 lives to terrorism. India has yet to condemn a single attack on innocent Pakistanis. It never will, because one does not condemn one's own proxies.
➡️ Turning over to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Jammu and Kashmir never was, neither is, nor will ever be an integral part of India. It is an internationally recognized disputed territory.
➡️ Regarding the threats from proliferation, attention is drawn to recurring incidents of theft and illicit sale of nuclear and other radioactive materials in India.
➡️ Pakistan does not seek an arms race or conflict. But we will never be coerced, and we will not allow India to manufacture space for war under the nuclear overhang.

For over two decades in different roles, I have seen Pakistan as a source of solidarity & solutions. But what has always stood out to me is the resilience of the Pakistani people & their determination to build a better future.
My message is simple:

Speaking to Pakistan TV correspondent Rana Abdullah, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “I could not finish my mandate as Secretary-General without coming again to Pakistan because Pakistan is deep in my heart. I was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and I witnessed during my 10 years the enormous generosity of the Pakistani people in receiving Afghan refugees and sharing everything with them. I also witnessed the resilience of the Pakistani people, their courage and enormous determination during difficult times. Today, Pakistan is again showing resilience in fighting terrorism and has demonstrated enormous initiative and credibility as an important mediator in major conflicts.”

Your Excellency, as you pause to look back on these years in China, I can almost feel the emotion behind those few minutes of quiet reflection — the friendships formed over countless conversations, the streets that slowly began to feel like home, the quiet pride of watching two nations draw closer through small, steady gestures.
Leaving a place that has become part of you is never easy. But please know that the warmth, patience and genuine care you extended to the Chinese people did not go unnoticed. It is felt, remembered, and carried forward in every smile exchanged, every hand extended, every moment of understanding built day by day.
Wherever your next journey leads, you will always have friends in China. The heart you poured into this work has already become part of the friendship itself.
Come back whenever you wish — the door, and our hearts, will always be open. With deep respect and warm wishes for the road ahead. #PakChinaFriendship

Pleased to receive Mr. Lu, Chairman of SinoAuradel, at the Embassy early this week. He briefed me on his company's recent visit to Pakistan, and I am delighted to see that journey come full circle.
Introduced and facilitated by the Embassy, SinoAuradel's delegation conducted an exploratory visit to Islamabad, Faisalabad, Lahore and Karachi in August, engaging public and private stakeholders in Pakistan's energy sector. The company has now formally decided to open its office and begin operations in Pakistan.
We welcome this commitment and look forward to supporting SinoAuradel's contribution to our energy future. 🇵🇰🤝🇨🇳

"This is the last interview I will give before I leave China." Ambassador of Pakistan to China Khalil Hashmi walked to me and said calmly. I didn't take it calmly. Ambassador Khalil Hashmi prepares to conclude his tenure here. During the past three years, he made a lot of efforts to promote bilateral cooperation, including trade and cultural exchange. Three years. Many supports. Always candid, always gracious. I think this isn't goodbye. It’s see you later.

Indeed Ambassador Asad.
Lot of criticism against FO but respect to so many of our diplomats who have distinguished themselves in several world capitals.
They are second to none in face of challenges that other diplomats with independent foreign policy do not face.
Khalil Hashmi retweeted
Appreciation and criticism should always be objective. Most people either indulge in unconditional praise or unreserved criticism—you are rare in doing this fairly.
FO deserves to be treated better for what it delivers, despite all the constraints it faces.
