🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Richard Brody of The New Yorker calls Bruno Dumont's RED ROCKS one of the best films of @TheNYFF or even the year!!
During week two of the New York Film Festival, Richard Brody saw what he considers to be one of the best films of both the event and the year: “Red Rocks.” The high-tension melodrama is set mainly in a calm, gentrified town on the French Riviera, and follows two groups of idle youths who meet by chance and clash when a girl from one group and a boy from the other become romantically involved. The characters, like the actors who portray them, are somewhere between five and seven years old. “The story’s most sophisticated elements coalesce with the kids’ ingenuously profound view of the world they’re discovering, in all its daily strangeness,” Brody writes. Kurosawa reimagines his own 1998 thriller in this haunting French-language adaptation of SERPENT'S PATH, transforming a revenge story into a chilling meditation on grief, guilt, and moral decay. "CRITIC'S PICK!" @TheFilmStage now available @PrimeVideo amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B…

"By turns suspenseful, playfully funny, and full of emotional weirdness, it's not just one of the best films at Cannes, it's also one of the best films of the year." @NextBestPicture
🇫🇷 In Bruno Dumont’s RED ROCKS, a group of children between the ages of 5 and 7 enact a kind of pre-preadolescent Romeo and Juliet, complete with rival gangs and puppy love, in a coastal French Riviera town. Don't miss the North American Premiere at #NYFF64 on October 8, 9 & 11! 🎟️: filmlinc.org/tix

Kiyoshi Kurosawa on film vs. digital: "The [Serpent's Path] remake was shot digitally, so details in the dark areas are rendered very clearly. This weakens the gloomy atmosphere somewhat, but it also allowed us to pursue a harder, more inhuman visual quality. Whether one is making a crime film or a horror film, I believe that finding ways to portray shadows digitally is one of the great challenges facing contemporary filmmakers. Through a long history of trial and error, cinema shot on film developed a rich and lustrous way of rendering darkness. For me, every film is a rewarding experiment in discovering how closely digital filmmaking can approach that quality—and whether it can ultimately surpass it." Kiyoshi Kurosawa on Robert Zemeckis' 'Here': "It has a simple premise, but it is an extremely intricate film, and I found it very interesting. I was impressed that anyone could conceive of such a structure and story. Above all, I was astonished once again by the extraordinary level of technique that allows Tom Hanks to play the character from youth to old age without anything ever feeling unnatural."
