The banning or restriction of the sale or display of Sally Rooney's books (or anyone else's) on the basis of their political views, represents a defeat for liberal democracy and freedom of expression. We only have to go back to the treatment of Salman Rushdie to understand what it means.

The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.  Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life. This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.  Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

Why is our government not taking action to sanction Israel for hunting down innocent Palestinian villagers in this brutal manner @HFalconerMP @Keir_Starmer ? Why such complicity in murder and arson?
This week saw Israeli settlers launch one of the most devastating pogroms on the communities of Masafer Yatta in recent memory, attacking three villages simultaneously with what appeared to be an unprecedented level of coordination with the Israeli army. 972mag.com/settler-soldier-p…

💯 this. ESOL services are so limited. It’s so dishonest and nasty to set people up to fail like this.
Interesting that Starmer has big plans for people to learn English. Where? Who? How? FE colleges have been decimated over the last few years. Where can people go to get cheap or free English lessons, that are near to their homes, taught by experienced, well-trained teachers?

Did he say this about the aid workers shot in the chest in Gaza and put in a mass grave?
I'm appalled at Russia’s horrific attacks on civilians in Sumy and my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones at this tragic time. President Zelenskyy has shown his commitment to peace. Putin must now agree to a full and immediate ceasefire without conditions.

Honoured to receive a Knighthood in the former Prime Minister’s Resignation list. It’s always been a privilege to serve our country, albeit through some incredibly challenging years.

Why doesn’t Starmer stand up and say, “enough“?

Hedge fund managers????
Gosh a lot of teachers on here seemingly very unhappy with their wages and numerous holidays and early pensions. Starting salary £30K - who gets that with no experience?

Absolutely stellar riposte here. Adore Derek.
I don't know who Milo is talking about here, but since he has expressed pride in British culture, here are the ways in which his outfit violates British traditions. 🧵

When my daughter developed anorexia, two of the most useful pieces of advice we were given included "staying off her wave" and "don't bargain, collude or otherwise enable the illness." When she got emotional, we had to remain calm and rational but loving and sympathetic, while steadfastly insisting that she eat every bit of food that we gave her. She threw fits, yelling and screaming and throwing food and dishes. Every meal became a war zone and, while her brother retreated to his room to eat in peace, we had to stay and fight. She cried. She tried to make us feel guilty. She tried to bargain and did everything she could to avoid fueling her badly malnourished body. She tried every trick that they warned us about, exercising in the middle of the night, feeding her food to the dogs if we weren't looking, cutting it into little bits and pushing it around on the plate to "appear" like she was eating, and many more. She became a master manipulator and covert expert in her goal to avoid eating. We had to harden our hearts and tolerate an unbelievable amount of abuse to get her back to a healthy weight. If we had colluded with her illness instead of treating it, I don't think she would be alive today. So why do the "so-called experts" tell us to collude with gender dysphoria? Why do we allow people to self-diagnose themselves and move on to extreme medical interventions that are not supported by good, solid scientific evidence and that do not lead to a whole, healthy bodies and minds at the end? Just like eating disorders, those suffering from gender dysphoria are attempting to dissociate from their bodies. It is not kindness to allow them to do so. It is even worse to celebrate their complete and total rejection of themselves. And now we are being asked to reorganize our entire society around this special class of people who are so fragile that they cannot be reminded of the reality of their sexed bodies. These are belief demands, not human rights.
