What are the best ways to store energy (or, more specifically, electricity)?
A 2024 update to my list of storage technologies that will help enable a zero carbon grid.
A very exciting moment for Octopus, as we take a majority stake in Uplight and accelerate our progress in the US market.

Despite talk of an EV "slowdown", the % of new vehicles in the UK that are electric in some way continues to trend upwards...

Incredible stat:
A single container ship of solar panels can provide as much electricity as more than 50 large LNG tankers of gas – or 100 large coal ships
There's many more insights in IEA Energy Technology Perspectives 2024 – here's a selection 🧵

If you import 1 tonne of coal, you can burn it to generate ~2 MWh of electricity.
If you import 1 tonne of solar panels, you can use them to generate ~1,000 MWh of electricity.
Is anyone on UK #energytwitter aware of good data on residential air conditioning sales / installations (both historical and forecast)?
I'm trying to look at the impact that A/C could have on residential electricity demand.

An opinion piece in the @Telegraph on Friday by Lord Lilley posed a series of (frankly misleading) 'questions' about clean energy
(Lilley is a former trustee at climate-denial group Global Warming Policy Foundation)
Let's try and answer them for him... 🧵

@NationalGridESO is predicting that households will voluntarily reduce their thermostat temperature by 0.5 C on average between now and 2050.
Feels optimistic (and I'm all in favour of cooler buildings, especially right now).
From the latest Future Energy Scenarios.

The 0.5C reduction is included in 2 of the 4 scenarios that @NationalGridESO models.

This is blowing my mind.
WTF
So obvious. How did I not ever think of this?
Batteries will be everywhere.

Given we're only two weeks from gates opening, I'm re-sharing my top tips for Glastonbury that proved pretty popular last year.
The only difference is that this year I *do* have a ticket. See you on the farm!
This is the first year since 2007 that I haven't got @glastonbury tickets. Perhaps the Glasto Gods saw what was coming and didn't think it was wise to take a 3-week old 🤷♂️
Either way here are my top tips for first time Glasto goers (and those who haven't been in a while).
A 🧵.

Replying to @Ed_Miliband
@Ed_Miliband also talking about "horsemen" in the context of the energy transition.
Only 4 of them though. As opposed to the 5 @MLiebreich talked about in his recent(ish) article.

twitter energy deniers: I'm looking for the best argument that renewable energy is more expensive than fossil fuel energy/raises the cost of energy. I don't want a plot that some dude posted on twitter, I want a link to a PDF of a quantitative analysis.
Octopus Energy is now offering a free weekly coffee from Caffe Nero to customers with a smart meter.
What a game-changer.
Another huge storage project under construction... this one in Utah and storing hydrogen in salt caverns "as deep as the Empire State Building is tall".
The project is aiming to replace a coal plant.
nytimes.com/2024/01/12/clima…
Claiming that "when full [these salt caverns] would hold far more energy in the form of hydrogen than all the batteries installed in the United States so far".
Huge if true.
