My paper, "Optimal Thresholds in Bitcoin," co-authored with @btcsindura has been accepted at this year's IEEE International Conference on Blockchain Computing and Applications. Sindura presented it at Bitcoin MENA and the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas this year.
Threshold signatures are a fantastic way to secure Bitcoin and a native security feature. An open question is how to choose the threshold, such as when to use a one-of-three versus a two-of-three setup. Most practices rely on rules of thumb, but we build a microeconomic model for this decision. We show that decaying multisig, where the threshold degrades over time, is an optimal structure and can be uniquely implemented in Taproot.

Gentle reminder that Bitcoin will never ask you for your Passport or ID document.
The academic journal Energy Economics has accepted my paper, "Expected Revenue, Risk, and Grid Impact of Bitcoin Mining: A Decision-Theoretic Perspective." We develop a microeconomic model of Bitcoin mining based on the hash lottery, and examine implications for how miners manage risk and affect the energy grid. This is a team effort from Texas A&M with my co-authors Chao Tian, Yuting Cai, and Ruthav Sadali.

These are my heroes --- the thirty faculty from around the world who convened in DC for the first annual conference of the Bitcoin Education Institute (@BTCedu). They are doing the important work of teaching Bitcoin to the next generation!
Washington, D.C. brought together educators, researchers, industry leaders, and builders for the Bitcoin Education Institute’s latest gathering.
The conversations reinforced why BEI exists: to help higher education engage seriously with Bitcoin through rigorous research, thoughtful dialogue, and stronger connections between academia and industry.
Thank you to everyone who joined us on July 31 and contributed to the discussion.
We’re just getting started.
I testified before the Business and Commerce committee of the Texas Senate on #bitcoin custody. Last year the Texas Senate established the Texas Bitcoin Strategic Reserve, a historic first step for our state. Gig em! youtube.com/watch?v=Mev54wqm…

@stanthereeves, professor emeritus at Auburn University, has brought Bitcoin into the classroom through his interdisciplinary honors seminar, “Exploring Bitcoin.” The course engaged undergraduates from across the university, concentrating on juniors but open to all levels, and devoted a full semester to understanding Bitcoin’s design, mechanics, and societal impact. Dr. Reeves has also taught a dedicated Bitcoin course in electrical and computer engineering, emphasizing accessibility for students with no prerequisites.
The course begins by examining money’s role and the flaws of the current monetary system, then moves to how Bitcoin offers solutions and operates in practice. Topics range from mining, layer-2 solutions, and energy considerations to social implications, individual sovereignty, and barriers to adoption. Students engage in hands-on projects and reading, gaining a deep, operational understanding.
Dr. Reeves designed the course to show how Bitcoin can fit as an interdisciplinary subject at honors programs nationwide. His teaching demonstrates that Bitcoin is not just technology, but a lens to explore economics, society, and innovation.
Dr. Reeves has agreed to speak at the BEI Annual Conference in Washington, DC, on July 31st. Register for the conference here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…

ANNOUNCEMENT: @bitstorian and I are thrilled to announce the winners of the Student Bitcoin Research Prizes for the 2025-2026 academic year.
We got a number of good submissions, and these are the best of the best!

Today, you’re sending your hard-earned capital to the government.
You don’t get a receipt. You don’t get a progress report. You don’t get a choice. You’re just funding a system that no longer represents you and an education model that doesn't prepare the next generation for the world we’re building.
It’s time to opt out. Today we are launching the Bitcoin Scholars Fund, a new non-profit scholarship granting organization.
Our mission? To redirect $21 Million from the federal government in 2027 directly into K-12 Bitcoin education.
How it works: Starting in 2027, your first $1,700 ($3,400 per couple) donated to BSF is a 1:1 Federal Tax Credit thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Net cost to you: $0.
We aren't just building a non-profit; we’re architecting an innovative "Zero-Leakage" treasury powered by $STRC to ensure nearly 100% of your principal hits the classroom, not our overhead.
Stop funding the legacy machine. Start funding financial education for kids.
The scholarship fund goes live on January 3rd, 2027, but the "Proof of Work" starts today.
Follow along as we help fix the schools by fixing the flow of capital.

Most blockchain is noise, but Bitcoin isn't printed out of thin air for profit like other tokens. True Bitcoin education? It's a rare course, taught by a handful of 'Bitcoin maniac' professors. They get it. @coryswan
Universities have evolved as isolated fiefdoms of knowledge. Faculty specialize in a field, students concentrate in a major. This leads universities to overlook Bitcoin, which mixes ideas from multiple domains together.
But Bitcoin can fix universities, too.
The opportunity today is to bring Bitcoin into all the disciplines it touches. Imagine a week of Bitcoin in classes like corporate finance, energy/power systems, macroeconomics, game theory, human rights, philosophy, government, integrated circuits, cryptography, and computer networking.
This will reveal the power of interdisciplinary innovation, expose Bitcoin's academic foundations, and reach students at scale.

I am thrilled to announce the launch of the Bitcoin Education Institute (BEI), a new non-profit dedicated to advancing understanding of Bitcoin through education.
Bitcoin is the most important and least understood technology of our time. Few know what Bitcoin really is, how it works, or why it has value. The BEI wants to change this at scale.
We plan to build out an army of Bitcoin educators, integrate Bitcoin throughout curriculum, and give Bitcoin a place on the podium of human knowledge, which it rightly deserves.
Follow @BTCedu for updates!

We model optimal threshold signature schemes in #Bitcoin, balancing security and usability for users. We show how degraded multisig can improve security and usability.
Thanks to @KorokRay for the collaboration!
Thanks to @GideonOPowell for speaking in my class about #bitcoin and energy!
Bought this used bike from a friend with #bitcoin. It was his first transaction. Peer to peer cash, the original use case!
