Happy to share that our article "Cell type and regulatory analysis in amphioxus illuminates evolutionary origin of the vertebrate head" has just been published in Nature Communications rdcu.be/dWVEN
We show #neuralcrest-like and prechordal plate-like cells in amphioxus!
1/n Based on single-cell transcriptomics, signaling pathway manipulations, and cis-regulatory analysis we propose that some key innovations in vertebrate head development, such as the prechordal plate (PrCP) and neural crest (NC), can be traced back within the chordate lineage.
6/n Congratulations to Iryna for designing the study, performing numerous experiments, analyzing the scRNA-seq data, guiding the students involved, and ultimately bringing the entire project to completion!
7/n If you want to listen to AI-generated podcast that explains our paper in plain English:

Just a comment on what AI got wrong: we have not shown actual NC-like cell migration (but we are working on it…)

Wonderful collaboration. Happy to be part of it!
Congrats to a former PhD student of @KozmikLab and alumnus of @imgprague Peter Fabian for receiving the prestigious #ERCStG. Well deserved! You are such a great person. Smart recruitment by @MUNI_Science and great boost for Czech DevBio community. Go Peto, go... @Fabian_Lab

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. In our new @Nature paper, Darrin Schultz @conchoecia used the position of genes on chromosomes to show that ctenophores (comb jellies) not sponges are the sister-group to all other animals. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

For 100s of years, sponges were assumed to have split first. In 2008 a transcriptome-based study led by @caseywdunn suggested ctenophores were sister to other Metazoa. The debate has bounced back and forth, ever since, even with more genomes sequenced.

I am so proud! Big congratulations to a former PhD student of @KozmikLab and alumnus of @imgprague Peter Fabian.
Congratulations to the IZFS 2023 Chi-Bin Chien Award winner, Dr. Peter Fabian! The award recognizes early career investigators who have made significant contributions to zebrafish research and will be presented at the #EZM2023 meeting on July 9-13, 2023 izfs.org/news/congratulation…

Happy to share our TOGA manuscript, now out in Science. Project started 6 years ago, we and others already used TOGA in numerous projects. TOGA integrates gene annotation and orthology inference, and scales to hundreds of genomes. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

The @ZoonomiaProject’s sequencing of more than 240 mammal genomes is paving new roads for understanding mammalian diversity and evolution and ourselves.

Last time @KozmikLab made transgenic #amphioxus for nature.com/articles/s41467-0…, this time we made a triple enhancer KO in mice. That’s what I call lab flexibility.
