Sure, Anthropic may have stolen all the world's intellectual property, destroyed the education system, incited mass layoffs among the corporate class, devalued all art and destroyed social trust but somehow they also managed to lose $80 billion in the first half of 2026

The whole point of art, in fact the point of engaging with another person's thoughts in any capacity, is to expand your very limited individual perspective on the world, not to live in a tiny box perfectly catered to your adolescent personal tastes

So... a lot of talk today about what's on the record, and what's off the record. It should be a delicate balance.
My own interesting experience with this happened in 2011. I got a 15-minute interview with Adrian Peterson during the lockout, and it didn't take long for him to go off on the situation.
At one point, Peterson said that the NFL owners were subjecting players to "modern-day slavery."
You may remember that particular headline.
I immediately stopped the interview and asked Peterson if he realized what he just said, and what the damage could be. I said that if he wanted to roll back time about 20 seconds and make that off the record, I would respect that.
He said... actually insisted... that it was on the record. Then, he repeated it at maximum volume to remove any doubt.
Editorial where I worked at the time wasn't really equipped to deal with it, and I was a noob. Didn't know what to do. I wrote it up and published it. Peterson's agent contacted me and said that I would never have access to any of his clients ever again. He then implied that I made the whole thing up.
I responded that I had the entire interview on a digital recording, and I'd be happy to e-mail it to him. I was not engaging in gotcha journalism. I had Peterson's explicit permission (encouragement) to put it out there. I sent the full audio, and never heard another word about it.
The point is, I believe we who capture the thoughts of prominent people have an obligation to at least make sure that confidential thoughts are kept as such. Sometimes, we speak off the cuff with emotion and say things we don't mean to say, and we don't always understand the process of making sure some things aren't placed in the public domain. This is not to say that we are responsible for sanitizing anything for anybody. But we are responsible to ensure that the stories we get are gotten fairly.
Re: what happened to Mike Macdonald, I don't believe that his interviewer got a story worth violating that implied trust. Because there is no story worth violating that trust.

Just checked out this White House app. Under “accomplishments,” it lists…
1) Gas prices from seven months ago, before the Iran war (they’re now more than $1.50 per gallon higher — $4.48, per AAA)
2) The inflation rate from seven months ago, before the Iran war (the most recent rate, for August, was a full percentage point higher, 3.4%)
3) GDP growth from three quarters ago (the most recent available quarter, Q2 2026, was nearly three points lower, 1.5%)

When you write to please a machine, you enter into a feedback loop that may not benefit your learning. While some writing tasks are straightforward and don’t necessarily require much process work, the type of long-form and engaged writing many college courses call upon does.

We at the Review mourn the loss of Annie Dillard (1945–2026). In celebration of her life and work, we’ve unlocked “For the Time Being,” Dillard's 1998 piece about the life of the French priest and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, from the archive. buff.ly/SxIquAa

You know what really pisses me off? When I’m zoomed all the way in on a road in Google Maps and it won’t show me the fucking road name, I have to scroll around until I find a label somewhere else. If I’m zoomed in on the road, just show me the name of the road @googlemaps

My students sometimes ask why they should memorise things in the age of Google and LLMs. But internalised facts are your bullshit filters and your raw material for creative association. Facts outside your head are inert.

I don’t really begrudge her, she lives so close to the text. But, I think this is viewing the work of film adaptation as an act of “translation”, and not as a new work. Nolan’s The Odyssey isn’t Homer’s Odyssey. It’s a new work, in conversation with the original.
Emily Wilson, whose translation of The Odyssey is itself unfaithful, critiques Christopher Nolan’s adaptation for emphasizing Odysseus’ “shame” over heroic “glory,” calling it a modern psychiatric revision of the character.
