This time of year we see posts claiming insider information on "what halloween is really about" from someone who is supposedly a "recent convert from witchcraft." I have a post reflecting on our tendency to think that a person's pre-converted sin makes them an expert. It doesn't. See comments.

I’m reflecting on consolation, dryness, and the experience of abandonment in the Christian life - what the Puritans called desertion - and how the Lord uses these season to shepherd us to himself. See comments.

When someone doesn’t have an active doctrine of sanctification at work in their theology, what ends up happening is a reduction into natural formation or else a pessimism about formation in general. See comments

Too often we confuse sanctification with the idea of growth, but there is a lot more going on biblically than that. Today is the launch day for my new book introducing the doctrine of sanctification. Check it out: bakeracademic.com/products/9…

I rarely see a theological system with a meaningful doctrine of sanctification up and running. Too often it is employed to remind the reader that we shouldn't equate it with justification, as if it has no doctrinal center of its own. A new post reflecting on a neglected doctrine (see comments).

“ If most high-level theology is written incomprehensibly to the person in the pew, then a real disjunction has opened up between a set of conversations that are happening in the university for the purposes of the egos of the people taking part versus the people who are actually holding the faith.” Coakley going full Coakley and I love it: nytimes.com/2026/10/18/opini…

Unless we can regenerate the depth of the theological tradition alongside the depth of spiritual transformation, our churches deserve to be empty.

One of the most common questions I get asked about spiritual formation is: Isn't spiritual formation just sanctification? I typically answer with something like, "Well, no, not really." Here is why. See comments for link.
