This story is a credit to @D_Bo20 and the Robinson Family. They want to tell you about Eli. They're hoping it helps others. It's worth remembering: “Maybe we can all be a little less certain about knowing what someone is going through." nytimes.com/athletic/7617243…

The biggest story out of the whole Clippers debacle is that ESPN is basically confirmed to just be an outlet for team owner propaganda in-between gambling ads and Pat McAfee clips. It’s been obvious for a while, but I don’t see how you could even argue against it now.

The reality is that everyone says they want great local coverage... but then they don't actually read it, or won't pay for it. Instead, they click on trade rumors, power rankings and hot takes, all while complaining that "the media" writes the stuff they consume. Depressing.
The Athletic's slow-motion exodus from local coverage obviously directly contradicts the original stated purpose of the publication, and is exacerbating the problems that were created when they initially vacuumed up so much of the local talent

The World Cup is not FIFA’s to sell. “Outside investors" should be nowhere near the greatest sporting prize on earth. "Outside investors" should be nowhere near a governing body, even a subsidiary of FIFA. The optics are terrible. The threat of interference is obvious. There was enough political interference in the sport at the World Cup over suspending Folarin Balogun’s suspension. Damaged the integrity of the game. There was commercial interference with the sponsored hydration breaks. Damaged the flow of the game. FIFA insists that the billions raised by “outside investors” will help smaller national associations in the story first reported by the Financial Times and Times. That, coincidentally, should guarantee Gianni Infantino votes to continue as FIFA president next March. FIFA also insists that these outside investors’ involvement in “FIFA Forward Enterprise” will not interfere with the “democratic” process of FIFA. But who are these private investors? What are their motives? Ego? Influence? Alarm bells should be ringing throughout world football about this deeply dangerous development.

I have come away from this article with many more questions than answers, chief among them whether Gen Z is really best represented by a 24 year-old they/them who has a BA in "general studies", no aspirations, no plans, no job —yet somehow, mysteriously, can pay $1700/mo in rent

I DO NOT think people understand that global warming doesn’t mean “no cold weather ever.” It means a warming planet destabilizes weather patterns, causing more extreme weather. This has been explained for decades and people still don’t get it.

I believe we now have evidence of FIFA's World Cup ticketing shell game: FIFA is colluding with third-party resale platforms for its own supply management. Look at this SeatGeek map (secondary market!) for Saudi Arabia vs Cape Verde. The circled areas are not random single resale tickets, but large, contiguous blocks of seats: entire rows and swaths in sections 101/102, 112/113, 119/120, 134–137, 139, ... The blue circles appeared weeks ago, then the purple blocks suddenly showed up a day or two ago, and the red blocks seem to have appeared recently too. That's not what ordinary fan or even commercial scalper resale looks like who resell pairs, fours, and scattered seats. Instead, this looks like inventory being dumped in bulk onto secondary markets, at prices below FIFA's official site. Why doesn't FIFA just lower prices on its own site Probably because official price cuts could trigger refund demands, chargebacks, or consumer-protection headaches from fans who already bought at much higher prices. Instead FIFA keeps official prices high, avoids openly admitting the market-clearing price is lower, and moves unsold inventory through third-party resale platforms instead.
