At 40, Stacie Arbourgh had her first mammogram. She felt fine, had no family history of breast cancer, and almost skipped the recommended follow up, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of stage 3 triple-positive breast cancer.
What followed were 26 infusions, a double mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction, and additional treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence. Her care at @TouroInfirmary and @wjmchospital included medical oncology, breast surgery, reconstructive surgery and infusion care, while her husband, children, family and friends provided the support she needed outside the hospital.
Through it all, Stacie leaned on an entire community including a wonderful care team that she says became like family.
Now cancer free, Stacie is sharing her story and one lesson she learned firsthand: Follow-up matters, even when you feel healthy.

When you’re having a baby, being able to talk with your care team and understand what is happening matters.
For Karol Matute, a mother of three from Marrero, @wjmchospital has been part of three important milestones in her family's life. All three of her children were born at West Jefferson, including her daughter Sophia, who required specialized care in the hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Through three pregnancies and premature deliveries, Karol found comfort in having physicians and nurses who listened to her concerns, answered her questions, and helped her feel confident in her care.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, West Jefferson Medical Center is recognizing the Spanish-speaking OB/GYNs, nurses, and other team members who care for Hispanic and Latino families across the Westbank.
At The Family Birth Place, that care includes support through labor and delivery, lactation services and a Level III NICU for babies who need specialized care after birth.
For Hispanic and Latino families, access to caregivers who understand their language and culture can make a meaningful difference in their healthcare experience.
