As Latter-day Saints, many of us—not all of us but many of us—are inclined to insist on “the law” and do so in an unloving way. I receive many letters from people who are devastated at the choices being made by someone in their family. As they ask, “What are we to do?,” the first thing I always suggest is keep loving them. In the end, that is something you and I can always do. God’s love for His children is an eternal reality, but why does He love us so much, and why do we desire that love? The answer is found in the relationship between God’s love and His laws. The love of God does not supersede His laws and His commandments, and the effect of God’s laws and commandments does not diminish the purpose and effect of His love. The Savior Jesus Christ commanded and reminded His followers “that ye love one another; as I have loved you. … By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34–35), and “if ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). May we remember that the Lord Jesus Christ atoned “for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also” (Alma 42:15).

One of the virtues I have seen President Russell M. Nelson portray unfailingly is his genuine, heartfelt kindness, which has often led him to leave the ninety and nine to go after the one. I think he must be the kindest man I have ever been associated with—and I have worked with a lot of good people! In the more than 40 years I have known him, I cannot think of a time that he was unkind, abrupt, rude, or insensitive. It just isn’t in his nature. I genuinely believe that Russell M. Nelson may be the man for whom the word “gentleman” was created. As we strive to follow the Savior, let us follow the example of President @NelsonRussellM’s Christlike character. #99plus1

Though it may seem impossible, feel impossible, healing can come through the miracle of the redemptive might of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He came here to make the impossible possible, the irredeemable redeemable, to heal the unhealable, to right the unrightable, to promise the unpromisable. #BecauseofHim

One day when I was repairing the roof on our home, I went to a local store to purchase some additional supplies. I was wearing my customary work clothes—casual pants and shoes, a well-worn T-shirt, and a baseball hat. Wanting to quickly return home and complete my project, I hurriedly entered the store and began looking for the things I needed. A man approached me as I was selecting my supplies and said, “Elder Bednar, the disguise is not working.” We laughed, and then he inquired, “Do you mind if I ask you a question?” I responded, “Well, that is why I am here.” He replied quizzically, “What do you mean?” I said, “You are the reason I am here. I am doing repair work at my home, and I need a few things to finish the task. But I am not in this store simply to buy roofing nails. I am here because God knew we were going to meet each other in this store and that you had something about which you wanted to ask. Please go ahead and share with me your question.” We talked in the aisle for about 15 minutes, and I tried to help him find the answer to his question. Was it merely a coincidence that I encountered this good man at the local store? Or was this episode divinely orchestrated by a loving Savior who knew and responded to the concerns of a faithful man—a one? I believe that in the work of the Lord there is no such thing as a coincidence. The worth of souls is great in the sight of God.

Lehi’s vision of the tree of life is a powerful parable about enduring to the end.   In 1 Nephi 8, Lehi experiences a vision that unveils the iron rod guiding his family to the tree of life. The iron rod becomes a powerful symbol of God’s word, while the tree of life embodies the boundless love of God.   Lehi’s vision also reveals a crucial truth: only those who steadfastly cling to the word of God will find salvation amidst the enveloping mists of darkness.   In this story, the righteous individuals show resilience as they “press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree” (1 Nephi 8:30).   Much like the inspiring characters in this story, we can navigate the challenges of temptation and confusion that surround us. By grasping onto God’s word, heeding the counsel of His prophets, and directing our thoughts toward the Savior, we have the power to press forward and partake of the blessings that await us.

Do you ever feel like you are falling short in your efforts to follow Jesus Christ? We all do! I know how you feel. Happily, perfection is not required to be squarely on the path of discipleship of Jesus Christ. Lesa and I are looking forward to the worldwide discussion on discipleship for the youth of the Church on Jan. 28. Mark the date! We hope you will join us for this historic event. We will be talking about what it looks like to stand in holy places, to gather with holy people, to speak of holy truths, and to be led by the Holy Spirit. We do all of this because we want to come closer to the Holy One. Please know how much we love you. We can’t wait to be with you soon.

It is a miracle that the Book of Mormon came forth, but the real miracle happens when you come to know for yourself that it is true. That is what changes lives.   The Book of Mormon has changed my life because of what it has taught me about Jesus Christ. He is my Savior and your Savior, my Redeemer and your Redeemer.

As we begin a new year, I encourage you to reflect on the Savior’s invitation to become like Him. He said, “Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am” (3 Nephi 27:27). How can we follow His example and strive to increase in righteousness? One way is to set goals that align with His will and teachings. Setting goals is not only a practical skill but also a spiritual discipline. It helps us to exercise appropriately our moral agency, to become agents who act and are not merely acted upon, and to evaluate our progress. Prayerfully seek the Lord’s guidance as you determine your goals this year, and consider sharing your goals with people you trust—whether that be your family, friends, or leaders. Always remember that the Lord loves you. He will support, sustain, and help you. He said, “I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up” (Doctrine and Covenants 84:88). May we all strive in 2024 to become more like our Savior. He declared, “I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross” (3 Nephi 27:13–14). He redeems us from sin, saves us from death, and invites us to follow Him and partake of His joy. I bear witness of His reality, divinity, and magnificent power.

Years ago, Sister Nelson and I visited Machu Picchu high in the mountains of Perú. We marveled at what we experienced. While we marvel at the accomplishments of men and women, all of that pales when compared with the creations and works of our loving Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. On this—my 100th New Year’s Day—I both marvel and rejoice at the miracle of the birth of Jesus Christ, His life, His ministry, His mission, and more. I marvel at the miracles required for the Prophet Joseph Smith to translate and publish the Book of Mormon, and I rejoice at the Restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I marvel at the faith of devoted Latter-day Saints around the world and rejoice that I have been blessed to meet countless individuals who have made my life so much richer. I marvel at our Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness and rejoice that families truly can be together forever. May we strive this new year to marvel and rejoice at the privileges and opportunities our Father in Heaven and our Redeemer Jesus Christ provide.

The search for #Jesus will take us far beyond the manger in Bethlehem to Nazareth, Galilee, and Jerusalem. We must find not only the infant Jesus, but Jesus the man, the Fisher of men, the Teacher, the Leader, the Healer, the Friend. #ComeUntoChrist

This Christmas season, because of health challenges of one of our dear family members, Harriet and I were reminded again of the need to always trust the Lord and the healing power that only Jesus Christ can provide. When we first heard the news about the illness, we were heartbroken—but hopeful. We were assured that health care personnel would do everything possible to cure the physical illness. And we knew that the Savior’s grace would be the power to bring divine healing to the soul. We all may take solace in knowing that God’s gift to all mankind, even His Son, Jesus Christ, is an active healing power throughout the year, not just at Christmas and Easter. Harriet and I are deeply grateful that the message of Christmas is a message of joy and healing. This Christmas season, and every season of the year, we can trust in Jesus Christ. He will bring hope and healing into our lives. Merry Christmas! May God bless you all.

Isaiah declared, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings; that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good; that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth; Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing … Break forth into joy; sing together … for the Lord hath comforted his people.” When the captured Abinadi explained these verses to King Noah’s priests, he prophesied of those who have testimonies of Jesus Christ and choose to stand as witnesses of Him. Abinadi said, “I say unto you, that all those who have hearkened unto [the prophets’] words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, … [are] the heirs of the kingdom of God. For these are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died, … And these are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good, who have published salvation; and said unto Zion: Thy God reigneth! And O how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet!” Abinadi then spoke of latter-day witnesses, “And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that are still publishing peace! And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who shall hereafter publish peace, yea, from this time henceforth and forever!” Abinadi concluded, speaking of the Savior Himself, “And behold, I say unto you, this is not all. For O how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea, even the Lord, who has redeemed his people; yea, him who has granted salvation unto his people.” Each of us can declare our witness of the Babe of Bethlehem. My Christmas wish is that we figuratively shout our witness of Jesus Christ from the mountains, creating an echo that crescendos throughout the world, and that we extend the invitation for others to come to know Him for themselves. Merry Christmas! “Immanuel” by Yongsung Kim. Image courtesy of Havenlight.

Our current English hymnal and Children’s Songbook contain thirty Christmas carols. Of these, five have explicit invitations to come to Bethlehem to see the Christ child and eighteen have implied invitations to do so. Seven carols celebrate the season generally but do not include such invitations.   One hymn that extends this invitation is “Angels We Have Heard on High.” It is based on an English translation of a traditional French carol. Even though it was penned in 1862, it reflects a legend that goes back centuries. The title in French, “Les anges dans nos campagnes,” literally translates as “The angels in our countrysides.” In the valleys of France, shepherds camped in the foothills. To mark the Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve, those in one end of the valley would start by chanting, “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” or “Glory to God in the highest.” Other shepherds heard this call and repeated it. Thus, “Gloria in excelsis Deo” was shouted along the mountainsides and progressed like an echo throughout the valley, announcing Christmas celebrations.   The direct English translation from the French declares, “The Angels in our countryside sang the song of heaven; and the echo of our mountains resumes this melodious tune: Gloria in excelsis Deo.” The shepherds are then asked, “For whom is this feast? What is the purpose of all these songs? What a victor, what a conquest is it worth these triumphant cries?”   The answer is that these songs “announce the birth of the Redeemer, the King of Israel. And, in gratitude for him, the earth sings, Gloria in excelsis Deo.” Then follows the song’s invitation, “Let us all look for the happy village that saw him born under its roof, let us offer him the tender tribute and our hearts and our voices!” In English we sing, “Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King.”   Wise men came to Bethlehem to see Jesus Christ as a baby. Wise men and women still figuratively come to Bethlehem to learn of His premortal Godhood, perfect life, and selfless and infinite atoning sacrifice. We should all do so.

As Christmas approaches, I realize that some may have concerns and perhaps some anxiety about the future. There may be a lot of “noise” in your life: more or less constant engagement online without downtime, without time to be quiet and reflect and think, without time to look inside and discern where you are and where you should be going. You may be influenced by unrealistic expectations such as “perfection should be immediate” or “uninterrupted happiness and success should be the norm in life.” I hope you will lay aside these misconceptions, dial down the “noise,” and take some time this Christmas season—at least an hour, if not more—to reflect on the wonder and the majesty of the Son of God. Let it be an hour of reassurance and renewal for you. Take time to relax, be at peace, and see this little child in your mind. Do not be too concerned or overwhelmed with what is coming in your life. Instead, take a peaceful moment to contemplate perhaps the most serene moment in the history of the world—when all of heaven rejoiced with the message, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14).
