Gisela Kahn Gresser holds the record for the most U.S. Women’s Championships won: nine titles between 1944 and 1969.
Born in Detroit, she learned the game in her late thirties. During a cruise from France to New York in the late 1930s, she borrowed a chess manual from a fellow passenger and taught herself how to play during the seven-day voyage. By the time she arrived, she was hooked on the game, and shortly afterward, she attended the first U.S. Women’s Chess Championship tournament as a spectator, organized by Caroline Marshall (wife of U.S. Champion Frank Marshall) and held at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
She participated herself two years later, in 1940, and in 1944, at 38 years old (and seven years after learning how to play), she won her first U.S. title with a perfect score. #USchess #womeninchess

Congrats teams! 🥇🥇
A massive congratulations to Team USA! 🇺🇸
Winning a world title is always special—but bringing home two at the FIDE World Senior Teams Chess Championships in the 50+ division is something extraordinary. Both the U.S. Open and Women’s teams stood at the top of the podium.
An unforgettable achievement and a proud moment for U.S. chess!
