Today @KarlDeisseroth of @StanfordMed @Stanford won the @NobelPrize for his co-discovery & development of Optogenetics. Here he explains what that is, and how it is unlocking the secrets of brain function & helping to cure diseases.
(And he explains that in ~1min).

How do plants turn local wounding response into a whole-plant defense?
Our work identifies CNGC13, a vasculature localized Ca²⁺ channel that helps propagate systemic Ca²⁺ waves and activate jasmonate & glucosinolate defenses in Arabidopsis.
A new piece of the puzzle in long-distance plant immunity and wound signalling and acts in parallel to well known GLR channels
First PNAS from my lab and is combined efforts of a great team : Misha @MishaKu16647918 and Ramgopal as first authors. Supported by Bhawana @BhawanaSha17 and Mahendra @MahiPawar12 from lab
We thank Alex Costa @lab_costa for his constant support and collaboration ; Yong-Fei Wang for electrophysiology
A huge shout out to @DBTIndia @NIPGRsocial for funding and encouraging basic plant science in India and Arabidopsis research

Farrell, Ryan @weillcornell and colleagues characterize a new ratiometric ER calcium indicator that uses HaloTag to normalize for reporter expression. The approach allows comparisons of ER Ca2+ concentration across cell types and subcellular regions. hubs.la/Q04tydMx0

Excited to see our work now published science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…!
Lysosomal dysfunction has long been considered a hallmark of aging, but we still know remarkably little about what actually changes inside lysosomes as organisms grow old. Using rapid lysosome isolation and metabolomics, we built the first atlas of lysosomal aging across tissues.
Half of all rare-disease patients are children, and more than 30% do not reach their fifth birthday

Using IP3R KO cells expressing single IP3R isoforms, we show that anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins bind to and inhibit channel opening, Ca2+ signals & ER-mitochondrial Ca2+ transfers mediated by all three IP3R isoforms. So, BCL-2 is a general IP3R modulator!
Excellent work published in Open Biology by Ian de Ridder, Claire Cauwelier and @JensLoncke from @LMCSLeuven together with fantastic collaborators: @vikas_arige and Larry Wagener from @DavidYule64 team for expertise in e-phys/Ca2+-puffs & @Irina52948708 for structural insights!

New "Cardiometabolic Clock" identifies biomarkers that associate with disease & early death:
1. HbA1c
2. Creatinine
3. Lymphocyte %
4. Urea nitrogen (BUN)
5. Red Cell Dist. width (RDW)
6. Pulse
7. Systolic blood pressure
Now you can calculate your CardioMetAge!
