#OTD in 1805, the Royal Navy defeated the combined forces of France and Spain at Trafalgar. The tactical brilliance, professionalism, technology and training which underpinned Adm Lord Nelson’s stunning victory have driven and shaped the Navy ever since. #TrafalgarDay

And there are many on the western left who call the Iranian theocracy the good guys and "on the right side of history", in spite of this.
🚨BREAKING: The Islamic regime has confirmed the death-sentence of 18 year old Melika Azizi was carried earlier today. Melika was arrested in January 2026 during nation-wide protests and charged with "moharebeh" (waging war against god for allegedly burning Islamic regime symbols. In court, Melika told the judge: "You let so many young people bleed. How can I remain silent? I don't care just kill me." She was a brave young lady!

He shouldn't be punished at all. Muslims who cannot accept the “insults” to their religion need to behave like adults and learn to handle their fragile religious sensibilities. Get a grip on your whiny feelings. In plain words, GROW UP!
As a Muslim, I find this incredibly extreme. I condemn insults towards any religious figure, whether Prophet Muhammad PBUH or Jesus PBUH. But the death penalty? A prison sentence or fine, proportionate to the offence and any repeat offending, would be more than adequate.

Cosmic neutrinos with extremely high energies are very rare, so an enormous volume of ice is needed to observe an adequate number of collisions. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory covers an entire cubic kilometre and was finished in 2011. Researchers soon discovered the first high-energy neutrinos and, a few years later, could publish their discovery of neutrinos that must originate far outside our solar system. The search for the universe’s neutrino sources could begin in earnest. Francis Halzen has received the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

Today, the Green Party in Britain ceased to act as a political party and became a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism. The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle. The shocking resolution adopted today legitimises armed struggle, calls for a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea” - meaning the destruction of the State of Israel - and labels as “racist” the aspiration of the Jewish people for self-determination. This goes far beyond the boundaries of legitimate political debate. As long as this resolution remains in place, it will be a stain on the history of the United Kingdom. Every political party in Britain, first and foremost the governing Labour Party, must unequivocally reject this twisted resolution.

Cool eval. Simply ask an LLM “Land or Water?” and give it a latitude and longitude coordinate as text. Ask 16,200 times, plot as image. The models know. From compressing the internet.

A man obsessed with trains finally steals one and immediately crashes it, killing several people. At his trial, he’s found guilty of multiple murders and sentenced to death. Before his execution, he’s offered a last meal and asks for a single banana. They give it to him. The next morning, he’s strapped into the electric chair. The executioner pulls the switch… Nothing happens. There’s never been a failure like this before, but because the law prohibits punishing someone twice for the same crime, the court is forced to release him. Within a week, the train-obsessed man steals another train, crashes it, and kills several more people. Once again, he’s sentenced to death. Once again, he asks for a single banana for his last meal. And once again, the electric chair fails. The same thing happens a third time. By now, the guards are convinced they’ve figured out his trick. When he asks for a banana before his fourth execution, the head guard snaps: “Oh, no you don’t! We know all about your little banana trick. You’re not getting one this time!” Instead, they serve him steak, potatoes, and berry cobbler. The next morning, they strap him into the electric chair and pull the switch. Nothing happens. The head guard stares at the executioner in disbelief. “Did you give him the banana?” “No, sir! We didn’t give him a banana. We swear!” Turns out the banana had nothing to do with it. The man was just a really bad conductor.

This is the kind of incident that makes life in Great Britain so infuriating so regularly nowadays: many people bought tickets for a specific date & time to see the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum. While in the queue to enter, they were handed a paper telling them the gallery was closing & their visit was cancelled. A "private event" was scheduled at the museum. Some people had travelled a long way at some expense. Many had gone to considerable trouble to arrange their schedule to spend the day in London. All had paid a large fee for the ticket, which the museum happily accepted, while also accepting a booking for a private event that would make the visit the ticketholders had paid for impossible. The museum invited the ticketholders they turned away to get in contact to reschedule - I imagine this would not be straightforward, as almost all interactions with big institutions these days involve being put on hold for patience-testing amounts of time & then dealing with someone in another country who is being paid tuppence &, while trying their best, may not have English as a first language. Does the museum not realise what huge inconvenience they have caused? Most people's lives are very busy. For many, this was a big event they had planned for & looked forward to. There is such deep thoughtlessness in the decision to turn ticketholders away - I can't help thinking those who work at the museum do not care about their visitors at all. And yet a museum is set up to display its collection to the public. That is its goal. Those in the museum are at the service of the British people before anything else. They ought not to treat those they serve with such cavalier disregard.
Waited since I was 7 years old to see the Bayeux Tapestry. Got in an hour-long online queue to spend £50 on tickets. Got there ahead of time. Stood in a queue for 20 minutes. Then was told halfway through the queue that the gallery was closing. The @britishmuseum stinks 😭
